Abstract

Key words Grice s conversational maxims verbal offer cosmetic vendors. This research examines the verbal offers produced by cosmetic vendors who are attempting to offer what they are selling especially Sariayu Martha Tilaar cosmetic products in department stores in Malang. The settings of the research are some department stores in Malang which are frequently used by the cosmetic vendors as a place to promote and offer their cosmetic products. The researcher chooses five department stores in Malang where the promotions of the cosmetic products are frequently found. They are Matos (Malang Town Square) MOG (Mall Olympic Garden) Ratu Raya and Mitra Department Store. In this research the researcher tries to map the cosmetic vendor s utterances while offering their product in the Gricean four maxims quantity quality relation and manner from the customers perspectives. Here the researcher wants to know what kinds of Grice s conversational maxims are used by cosmetics vendors and how they obey those kinds of maxims reflected in their utterances. After analyzing the data the researcher found that the highest percentage of maxim that is used by the cosmetic vendors is the maxim of relation that is used for ten times (43.47%). The second highest percentage is the maxim of quantity that is used for five times (21.73%). Then the less percentage is maxim of manner (17.39%) and maxim of quality (17.39%). The first conclusion from this research is the cosmetic vendors utterances use all of the four conversational maxims with the maxim of relation as the most frequently used. The second is the cosmetic vendors obey the conversational maxims by being informative by providing satisfactory information and response by showing direct and avoiding obscurity of responses and by giving relevant responses toward their costumers question. In this research the researcher gives two suggestions that are for future researchers and the students. The first suggestion is addressed to the future researchers who are going to conduct linguistic studies. It shows that linguistic theories especially Pragmatic theories (i.e. the cooperative principle and conversational maxims) are applicable in daily conversation (i.e. the conversation between the cosmetic vendors and costumers). The second suggestion is addressed to the students to understand the conversation process in accordance with simplicity clarity relevance which then give them such a communicative competence facilitating them to use the spoken language well.
