Abstract

Beliefs that exist in society are varied and people create system to institutionalize and re-institutionalize the beliefs in form of religions denominations sects and cults those institutions claim to have absolute truth in their concepts. William Blake s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell signifies institutionalization and re-institutionalization of beliefs through system of signs contained in the work. The purpose of this study was to know the evidences in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell that signify the institutionalization and re-institutionalization of belief. Through the findings and discussion of this study it is hoped that people in the society will be more aware of concepts ideas and system in the society and encourage people to question believed truth in common concepts in the society. This study employed the written text only of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell that was written in twenty seven illuminated plates. Each of the plate was analyzed and seen as sign for institutionalized and re-institutionalized belief. Research design that was employed in this study was qualitative design which applied semiotic analysis. The research instrument was the writer and related literary theories. To collect the data the researcher read the work The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and other references that support the study then obtained the data from the reading. The findings of this study show that twenty seven plates of William Blake s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell have connected ideas which all signify institutionalized and re-institutionalized belief although each plate contains different ideas and presented in different forms. The Marriage of Heaven and Hell also signifies the process of the institutionalization and re-institutionalization of belief into sects denominations or cults as the cause of freedom of thinking and the openness of interpretation. However limited human s mind and personal or a group s need many times causes weaknesses in the system of the institutionalized and re-institutionalized beliefs. Based on the findings of this study it is suggested that people realize the most important thing inside a system and that they have courage to question believed truth in the society. It is hoped that by realizing that there is no absolute truth people who belong to an institution of belief will respect people who belong to other beliefs.
