Abstract

This study aims at investigating the use of code switching in the articles of Kawanku magazine. There are two research problems in this research namely (1) what are the types of code switching based on the nature of the juncture where language change takes place found in the style life entertainment and daily dose articles of Kawanku magazine as written by the journalists (2) what are the reasons for the journalists to switch the language from Indonesian into English or vice versa in the style life entertainment and daily dose articles of Kawanku magazine The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. There is only one kind of source of data in this research that is the articles written by the journalists of Kawanku magazine published in five editions from August 27th until November 5th 2008. The results show that there were three out of five types of code switching in the articles of Kawanku magazine namely (1) intra-sentential switching (72.72 %) (2) inter-sentential switching (21.36 %) and (3) emblematic switching (5.9 %). There were ten reasons why the journalists switch the codes. They were (1) expressing their group identity (28.27 %) (2) inserting a real lexical need (16.80 %) (3) talking about a particular topic (15.77 %) (4) quoting somebody else (12.90) (5) emphasizing or strengthening message (7.58 %) (6) inserting sentence fillers sentence connectors or interjection (4.91 %) (7) repetition used for clarification (4.31 %) (8) softening and strengthening request or command (4.3 %) (9) modernity (4.3 %) and (10) being emphatic about something (0.68 %). From the findings it was known that the journalists mostly use code switching in the type of intra-sentential switching in the form of a noun phrase. They did that to mention beauty stuffs fashion and style products. In this case this community believed that the products from West Country had better quality. Therefore the reason for the journalists to use code switching was for expressing group identity they wanted to show that this magazine was for high class female teenage readers.
