Abstract

Modern men tend to perceive Evil (thus God) to be more scientific than religious. This shifting of perspectives has continually been depicted in modern horror icons. Yet post-modern society also develop another perspective which is more of a compromise rather than a conflict. Using Goldmann s Genetic Structuralism this thesis seeks that (re)conciliation world view that underlies the cultural products of post-modern society as depicted in Van Helsing the movie. Such (re)conciliating world view has been found in Van Helsing the movie such as the holy water crosses candles skulls bats and eggs appear within the movie. Yet all of those religious icons are accompanied by the modern technology gadgets serums and sets of laboratories equipments in the Frankenstein s and Dracula s experiment. The cooperative idea of religion and science is supported by characters depictions. Van Helsing as the main character is actually a fallen angel who despite his being endowed with divine power chooses to take advantages of modern devices to overcome Evils. Carl the Friar the side-hero of the story is busier spending his time in laboratory rather than in his clerical dormitory.
