This study is intended to find out how movie viewing activity can improve students speaking ability. It was conducted at Englishland Course Malang because its students do not seem to have motivation and have difficulties in speaking English. This study is a descriptive qualitative research because (1) the researcher works in a natural setting (2) it concerns with the process rather than with the outcomes (3) it describes the facts of the subjects (4) the researcher is the key instrument in collecting the data. The subjects are 20 students of four classes with different levels level 1 level elementary A level pre-intermediate B and level basic B. In this study the instruments used are observation guide questionnaire and interview guide for the students and the teacher. From the findings it can be concluded that the students had speaking problems which hampered them from expressing their ideas in the movie viewing activity. The problems that occurred in the movie viewing activity were students-do-not-use-English and students-do-not-want-to-speak-English . To minimize the students problems the teacher employed some strategies i.e. giving direct translation giving reward/praise ( very good you can do it etc) and helping them to re-arrange the sentences. Based on the research findings some suggestions are formulated in order to minimize the students speaking problems. For the students they must follow the teacher s instructions well so that they can improve their speaking ability. They should be aware that the teacher uses these strategies not only to minimize the problems occurred but also to improve their speaking ability. It is also hoped that the students will be more active in using English while doing movie viewing activity so that they can improve their speaking ability. In addition they must support one another in order to create a conducive learning atmosphere in the class that can stimulate motivation in improving their speaking ability. For the teacher she must help students to minimize their speaking problems so that the movie viewing activity may run well and she can achieve the target of the teaching by employing the learning strategies well. Since lack of motivation and reluctance appear to be problems of the students in movie activity the teacher has to be able to create appropriate strategies to encourage the students to use English in expressing their ideas. For example giving exciting movies or unknown movies can make them curious about the story. In addition the teacher should give some instructions before the activity begins.
