Vocabularyi s one of the componentso f languageth at shouldb e masteredb y languagele arnerss incel acking in vocabulary l earnersw ill find difficulties not only in uttering what they have in mind but also in reading to acquire information. It is impossibleto learn languagew ithout leamingt he vocabulary.S tudentsw ho do not leam vocabulary along with the grammar will not be able to use language for communicationT. hat is why vocabularyi s obviously an important componentin languagele arning. This pre xperimental study are carried out to find if there is any real increase of the freshmen rec ptive vocabulary dwing the lntensive Couse program. The amount ofreceptive vocabulary they acquired during the first halfofthe Intensive Course is computed by comparing the amount of the freshmen receptive vocabulary before the Intensive Course and after the fint half of the program. The population are all the freshmeno f the EnglistrD epartnent in the academicy ear of 1999-2000T. here are 119f reshmenB. ecauseo f the lack of time and energy t he researchetra keso nly 2 classesa s s4mplew hich are drawn by using the simple randomt echnique.S o t here are 40 freshemn evaluated further. The study yields the following findings (l) The mean of the freshmen recepive vocabulary of the pre-test scores is 2770.The maximum vocabulary size is 3201 w hereasth em inimumv ocabularys izei s I683 (2) them eano f the freshmen receptivev ocabularyo fthe post-tesits 2957.T he lowests corei s 2145a ndt he highesst corei s 3a98 ( 3) the meano f the amounto f receptivev ocabularyth e freshmena cquired uring the fint half of the IntensiveC oursei s 187.275 ( 4) the tvaluei s 18.02.I t exceedsth e limit of the t-testv aluef or p 0.1 which is 2.58.I t meansth at therei s a significant increasein the freshmenr eceptivev ocabularys ize during the first half of the lntensive Course program (5) there are gained words (mores tudentsa re able to matcht hem correctly in the post-testt han in the pre-test) lost (lesss tudentsa re able to matoht hem conectly in the post-testt han in the pretest) o r remaint he same( the numbero f studentsw ho could matcht hem correctly in the pre- andp ost-testsa re sarne (6) there are 32 studentsh avei ncreasedth eir receptivev ocabularys ize 5 studentsh aved ecreaseda nd 3 studentsh avet he same receptivev ocabularys ize after attendingt he first half ofttre IntensiveC ourse prcgram
