Keywords Compliment Responses Indonesian Native Speaker American Native Speaker Understanding Speech Acts across culture in particular compliment responses is very essential nowadays as it saves us from the communication breakdown during communication with people from different cultural background. Thus this study aims at studying the major compliment response strategies performed by Indonesian and American native speakers. Moreover it also investigates the differences between Indonesian and American speakers in performing compliment response strategies. Besides it tries to find out the underlying reasons of one in responding to compliments. This study employs a descriptive qualitative design. The data were obtained from respondents consisting of 40 participants (20 Indonesian and 20 American respondents). Questionnaire was utilized as an instrument to collect the data. There are two types of questionnaires used. First the questionnaire is in the form of discourse completion test (DCT) which consists of 12 points where the informants are asked to respond to compliments in certain situation. Then the second questionnaire was aimed at finding the underlying reasons why do people give response to compliments. In this study questionnaires were distributed twice. The first cycle was the try out which intended to ensure the validity of the questionnaire. The next cycle was distributing the questionnaires to the 40 participants for the actual result of this present study. Furthermore the data collected were analyzed based on Herbert s Taxonomy (1990). The findings revealed that (1) Appreciation token becomes the most frequently used strategies by Indonesian native speakers (28.3%). Meanwhile for American native speakers comment acceptance (34.6%) becomes the major used strategy when they are responding to compliments. (2) Both American and Indonesian native speakers employed the strategies which belong to agreement categories. In other words either American or Indonesian compliment recipients tend to accept the complimentary force from the Addresser. (3) For Indonesian respondents cultural matters or being polite to the people who gave the complimentary force to them become the most chosen reason of responding to compliments (100%). Whereas for the American native speakers Habit is the highest chosen reason of responding to compliments (95%). This present study of compliment responses in English and Indonesian can serve as a reference to enrich the body of linguistics. Nevertheless it is strongly recommended that further studies be conducted on daily discourses and from the point of view of other field especially syntactic pattern of compliment responses for its betterment.
