Humor seems to be rather indefinable as a theoretical concept. However this has not prevented scholars of various disciplines ranging from psychology to sociology to pedagogy to linguistics from questioning into the topic of humor. The problems involved in defining humor are such that several scholars have doubted that an all-embracing definition of humor could be formulated. Yet the more interesting focus on studying humor does not concern its complicated definition but the reasons and strategies of why a humor is perceived as a humor by the audience. Humor is not only part of language intelligence which colors civilization but also part of the builder of civilization itself. Humor is developing time to time and becomes a sign of trend and even a symbol of life changes. Therefore study about humor will not only be exciting but also both enlightening and useful for linguistics improvement. However a study about humor needs a deep analysis in order to make it sufficiently explainable. There are many approaches used in studying humor including Semantics Semiotics Pragmatics and rhetorical analysis. However the most explicit device to study humor is reference and inference. Reference is the act in which a speaker or writer uses linguistic forms to enable a listener or reader to identify something. While inference is the act of catching correctly which entity the speaker intends to identify by using a particular referring expression. The two terms discover several possible linguistic devices related to pragmatics to analyze humor. Besides Semantics approach is also to be explored in this present study to make the humor well-explained. The two main devices are required because sense and reference are part of Semantics whereas inference is another way of saying implicature. Therefore the discussion of semantic and pragmatic in this present study is sufficient and required to digest humor in Shrek the Third movie script the object of this present study for they are able to state the process of humor deliverance as well as humor acceptance in the script. Shrek the Third is a good object to study due to its high intelligence and contemporary humor. Shrek the Third has outstanding style of humor which needs certain ways to infer. The script covers so many powerful things that show its world excellence of humor deliverance. It has the part where intelligence should be used to infer the meaning correctly as well as the part where fantasy is required. Shrek the Third movie script is world-widely popular for its smart parody and irony and thus its humor is both real and magnificently relates to life value. This is also a plus point for Shrek the Third Movie script to observe in order to reach the objective of this study.
