Advisors (1) Dr. Suharyadi S.Pd. M.Pd (2) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.Pd. M.A. Ph.D. KeyWords Writing Quality Descriptive Text Southern Thailand Students Indonesian Students. The objective of this study is to compare the writing quality of descriptive texts composed by eighth-grade students of Southern Thailand and Indonesia. The subjects of this study were twenty eighth-grade students of Thamsuksamulnithi School Hatyai and twenty eighth-grade students of SMP Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang. This study employed a descriptive-comparative study with a quantitative approach. The researcher asked the students to write descriptive texts which consist a 100 to150 words with the topic about family. The data was analyzed by using scoring rubric adapted from Jacobs et al. (1981) consist of content organization grammar vocabulary and mechanics. The researcher calculated the overall writing scores and means scores in every aspect of the students writing. After that the researcher conducted a statistical test by using a t-test for independent samples to know the significant difference between the mean scores of Southern Thailand and Indonesian students. The result shows that the mean score of Indonesian students is higher than in Southern Thailand. Indonesian students get 78.75 while Southern Thailand students get 74.25. The aspects of the writing test that have been analyzed also showed that on the average Indonesian students got higher scores than Southern Thailand students. Moreover the statistical test showed that there is a significant difference between the mean scores of Southern Thailand and Indonesian students writing. The result of the p-value is .033 where it is smaller than the significance level .05. Hence this study confirms that eight graders in Indonesia have a better writing quality than in Southern Thailand. The different quality of writing between Southern Thailand and Indonesian students might be caused by some factors for example the differences of exposure in the learning and teaching writing the quality of teachers and the teaching method of the English teachers. This research also gives some suggestions to the English teachers especially when they are teaching writing. The result of this research can guide the teachers to improve their students writing performances by providing some suitable styles in teaching writing as well as more writing exercises. For future researchers this research can be the inspiration in conducting a study in a similar field. The future researchers can investigate the writing problems in the descriptive text of eighth grade students of Southern Thailand and Indonesia. Besides the future researchers can also investigate the students writing problems in other text types.
