Abstract

The influence of Genetic Model Lecturing to the Students Metacognitive Competence at the Biology Department of Sciences Faculty Malang State University By Khairil Learning problem and learning outcomes of the Genetic Course generally becomes hurdles at the Educational Colleges or Institutions. Many students consider that this course is difficult to learn especially its conceptual terms and lecturing materials. The hurdle is foreseen relating to the model and strategy of lecturing that have been applied so far that is underlying on conventional way lecture-centered. Based on the preliminary observation the researcher found that students took genetic course enthusiastically and showed high learning motivation and they could also get involved in lecturing and conducting practicum independently under lecturer and its assistance supervision as facilitator of that course. Learning urges not only to comprehend the concepts of instructional materials but it should also be needed to advocate students competence to in thinking. Well-designed activities in the learning instructions of genetic course is pondered can drive student to acquire metacognitive competence scientific work competence improving learning outcomes and metacognitive skill. This study intended to describe the pattern or model of getnetic course lecturing and eximed hyphoteses toward students metaconitive competence their scientific work cognitive learning outcomes and metacognitive skill based on their educational discipline category (education major or noneducation major) prior academic competence (high or low) and level of the genetic course (Genetic I and Genetic II The study was a survey research design in the form of explanatory research conducted at the Biology Department of the Faculty of Sciences Malang State University. The subject of the study were students of both education major and noneducation major in which they were investigated for two semesters during academic year 2007/2008 getting along with the offer of the courses Genetic I at the first term and Genetic II at the second term of academic year 2008/2009. The istrument employed in gathering data were observation sheet metacognitive inventory awareness sheet of researching scientic work evaluation sheet or rubric for metacogntive skill genetic test theory and document obsrvation sheet. Data were analyzed by using ANACOVA and then proceeded to be analysed with the application of Least significance Test (LSD) to eximine differences while data related to lecturing process of Genetic course were analyzed descriptively. Findings showed that steps or pattern employed in lecturing genetic course comprised of assigning reading task concerning instructional materials writing summary of the reading task formulating questions and answers presentation and discussion. Practicum was implemented in the form of project practicum and classical practicum. Evaluation of students learning achievment was based on the mean score of paper and pencil test and alternative assessment. This genetic lecturing model could encourage students to have questiong and communicative competence improve learning motivation develop thinking ability urge strategy in lesson plan develope competence on IT lead and participate in discussion as well as group problem solving and identify strenghts and weaknesses of the leaning activities. Finfing also revealed that students metacognitive competence was not affected by classroom factor prior competence and course level. Students competence on scientific work was influenced by course level. Students cognitvive learning outcomes had an influence on classroom factor and course level but it did not have relationship with prior competence. Metacognitive skill was influenced by calssroom factor prior competence and course level. Pengaruh Model Perkuliahan Genetika di Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UM Terhadap Kemampuan Metakognisi Mahasiswa Oleh Khairil Masalah pembelajaran dan hasil belajar genetika secara umum masih menjadi kendala di berbagai Lembaga Pendidikan Tenaga Kependidikan (LPTK). Masih banyak mahasiswa yang menganggap genetika sebagai ilmu yang sulit atau tidak disukai dan lemah dalam memahami konsep atau materi genetika. Permasalahan tersebut diperkirakan berkaitan dengan pola atau model perkuliahan genetika yang diterapkan selama ini yang dilakukan secara konvensional lecture centered. Hasil pengamatan awal terlihat bahwa mahasiswa yang mengikuti perkuliahan genetika di Jurusan Biologi Universitas Negeri Malang sangat antusias menunjukkan minat dan motivasi belajar yang tinggi dan mampu melakukan beberapa bentuk kegiatan perkuliahan dan praktikum secara mandiri hanya dengan arahan dosen dan asisten sebagai fasilitator dalam mata kuliah tersebut. Kegiatan-kegiatan yang dirancang dalam perkuliahan genetika diduga mampu melatih mahasiswa dalam mengembangkan kemampuan metakognisi. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendeskripsikan pola atau model perkuliahan genetika dan menguji hipotesis terhadap kemampuan metakognisi mahasiswa berdasarkan kategori kelas kemampuan akademik awal dan macam mata kuliah. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian survai dalam bentuk explanatory research yang dilaksanakan di Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UM pada mahasiswa kelas pendidikan dan non pendidikan selama 2 semester. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah lembar observasi pelaksanaan perkuliahan genetika inventori kesadaran metakognisi (MAI) tes teori tes praktikum lembar observasi dokumen. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan Anakova dilanjutkan dengan uji beda LSD (Least Significant Difference). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa langkah-langkah model atau pola perkuliahan genetika terdiri dari memberi tugas membaca yang berhubungan dengan materi perkuliahan membuat ringkasan hasil bacaan membuat pertanyaan serta jawaban presentasi dan diskusi. Praktikum dilaksanakan dalam dua bentuk kegiatan yaitu praktikum proyek dan praktikum klasikal. Evaluasi hasil belajar mahasiswa berdasarkan rata-rata skor paper and pencil test dan alternatif assesmen. Kemampuan metakognisi mahasiswa tidak dipengaruhi oleh faktor kelas (pendidikan dan non pendidikan kemampuan akademik awal (tinggi dan rendah) dan macam mata kuliah (Genetika I dan Genetika II).
