Abstract

ABSTRAK Anwar 2017. Proses Berpikir Guru dalam Penyediaan Scaffolding pada Pembelajaran Matematika. Program Studi Pendidikan Matematika Pascasarjana Universitas Negeri Malang. Pembimbing (I) Prof. Purwanto Ph.D. (II) Dr. Edy Bambang Irawan M.Pd. (III) Dr. Abdur Rahman As ari M.Pd. M.A. ABSTRACT Anwar 2016. Teachers Thought Processes of The Provision of Scaffolding in Teaching and Learning Mathematics. Postgraduate Program of Universitas Negeri Malang. Supervisors (I) Prof. Purwanto Ph.D. (II) Dr. Edy Bambang Irawan M.Pd. (III) Dr. Abdur Rahman As ari M.Pd. M.A. Keywords Analitical Contingent Dominant Intuive Contingent Dominant Teachers Thought Processes Teaching and Learning Mathematics Scaffolding The teachers thought processes and actions are two essential things that influence each other to achieve the professionalism of teachers. One of the activities of the teachers thought process is to provide scaffolding to students who pose a question. The provision of good scaffolding should occur in a contingent manner i.e. the aids provided by teachers are equal with the level of student understanding. Therefore teachers need to think through all the considerations that can lead to appropriate decision-making related to the provision of scaffolding in teaching and learning. The existing studies have explored the teachers scaffolding activities but they have not revealed yet the thought processes of teachers. Indeed revealing the thought processes of teachers during scaffolding is very helpful for teachers to enrich the knowledge for their best teaching and learning practice. Therefore this study was aimed at producing the theory of the teachers thought processes of contingent dominant during scaffolding. Furthermore as the scaffolding provided by teachers was closely related to the assignment designed and implemented by the teacher the processes of revealing the teachers thought processes in this study have been started since teachers designed and implemented the learning assignment. This study which was conducted in the context of teaching and learning mathematics especially on trigonometry employed a qualitative approach (grounded theory design). The research subjects were two high school math teachers each of whom has a characteristic of analytical contingent dominant (GA) and the intuitive contingent dominant (GI) during scaffolding. The selection of the two subjects and learning material (trigonometry) based on the long-term observation of the study conducted by 32 teachers of mathematics in secondary schools both in Malang and Banda Aceh (February October 2016). The data collection was conducted by the researcher as the main instrument whose teaching and learning implementation was recorded by the researcher using videotape recorder especially when scaffolding was provided to students who posed a question. Having chosen each of the fragments of scaffolding that resembles the two subjects interviews using stimulated recall method were conducted to reveal the subjects thought processes. The interview was intended to reveal the thought processes in the stages of generating ideas clarifying ideas and assessing ideas based on the stages of thinking proposed by Swartz. To check the validity of the data determine the consistency of the thought processes of the subject and complete the lack of data both subjects were interviewed at least twice. Furthermore all recorded interviews were transcribed verbatimly for the purpose of data analysis. The research has shown that the thought processes of analitical contingent dominant subject and intuitive contingent dominant subject in the provision of scaffolding in teaching and learning mathematics is different. At the stage of generating ideas the thought processes of analitical contingent dominant subject in the provision of scaffolding consider several things the conditions of the student (forgetfulness and careless) the ability of the student (lower middle and upper middle) and the characteristics of items (hard and easy). At the stage the subject considered dominantly the abilities of student (middle to upper or lower middle) in terms of emphasizing the problems using the diagnostic strategy and continued with the examination or intervention strategies. At the stage of clarifying of the ideas because the analitical contingent dominant subject considered the student s ability he suggested (1) for student whose ability was upper middle required to held scaffolding in the form of guiding or probing using checking strategies or interventions positively to the concept that students have already learned. (2) for the lower middle student the checking or intervension strategy in the form of guiding could be directly performed. At the stage of assessing ideas subject tends to draw a conclusion based on the belief gained from the experience. For middle-up student subject tends to start scaffolding by implementing checking and intervention strategies followed by diagnostic strategies and dominantly in the form of guiding. For the case of lower-middle students subjects tend to provide the scaffolding using diagnostic strategy followed by the intervention or checking strategies in the form of recalling. Therefore the use of questions was expressed more by the subject during the scaffolding. At the stage of generating ideas the thought processes of intuitive contingent dominant subject in the provision of scaffolding considered several things the condition of students (getting confused student already has her own concept) the ability of student (middle to upper or lower middle) and the process or the result. At the stage the subject tends to consider the condition of student (getting confused being careless and misspeak) by emphasizing the problems using diagnostic and interventional strategies. At the stage of clarifying the ideas because the subject tend to consider the conditions of the students she suggested that imitating the process that was taught previously required the student to find the purpose or results quickly. At the stage of assessing the ideas the subject decision was made based on the belief gained from the experience. They tended to get started scaffolding by applying diagnostic strategy followed by intervention strategy to uncover the facts. Therefore the use of imperative was expressed more by the subject during the provision of scaffolding.
