Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd (II) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono Ph.D. (III) Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi. Key words interlanguage pragmatics motivation pragmatics second language acquisition speech act production. This study examined the relationship between interlanguage pragmatic motivation and the students speech act production. There has been relatively little inquiry into how second language learners acquire L2 pragmatic and which factors affect learners acquisition of L2 pragmatic. Based on the need for more research on the motivation factors that affect developmental outcomes in L2 pragmatics the following research questions were investigated 1) Is there any significant correlation between students general pragmatic motivation and students speech act production 2) Is there any significant correlation between students speech act specific motivation and students speech act production 3) Is there any significant correlation between students interlanguage pragmatic motivation and students speech act production It employed correlational research design to examine the degree of relationship between interlanguage pragmatic motivation and the students speech act production. The data for the present study were collected using three types of elicitation instruments an interlanguage pragmatic motivation questionnaire a written discourse completion task and interview. Analyses in the present study proceeded in three stages descriptive statistics correlation coefficients and multiple regressions. The findings of the study show that 1) the students general pragmatic motivation examined demonstrated insignificant to the EFL students speech act production based on the significant value coefficient obtained (.767) and the correlation is positive and low based on the coefficient obtained (.044) 2) overall the speech act specific motivation showed insignificant based on the significant value coefficient obtained (.538) and the correlation is negative and low based on the coefficient obtained (-.091) 3) The participants interlanguage pragmatics motivation showed insignificant relationship on the EFL students speech act production based on the coefficient obtained (.785) and the correlation is positive and low based on the coefficient obtained (.104). There are some possible causes that can be interpreted to disclose the reasons why there is no relationship between interlanguage pragmatic motivation and students speech act production. The pitfall of Written Discourse Completion Task (WDCT) in eliciting the students speech act production the students lack of schemata in responding to the questions the concept of face and the ambiguous instruction in WDCT. To conclude the Indonesian learners of English who are considered having good interlanguage pragmatic motivation doesn t reflect their ability in speech act production especially in producing acts of refusal request and apology. Thus further study is needed to examine the effects of some other variables which may account for differences in learners pragmatic achievement.
