Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D. (III) Prof. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. Keywords narratives doctoral candidates dissertation The present study aims at revealing the doctoral candidates experiences in accomplishing an EFL dissertation in the form of both real experiences and perspectives in association with the research variables the initial stage of dissertation writing the stage of conducting research and the stage of writing a research report in the form of dissertation. This study is narrative qualitative in nature as the researcher did not manipulate or give treatment to the subjects. The data was collected by narrative inquiry design using an in depth interview. A total of 3 EFL fresh graduates who have successfully completed their dissertation writing were recruited as the research respondents. The EFL graduates were those who were from different backgrounds and institutions and did their doctoral program in English language education at Universitas Negeri Malang. One of the three subjects completed her dissertation writing within 6 semesters while the other two subjects completed their dissertation within 7 semesters. All the respondents were asked to recall their experiences and activities during the process of preparing a research proposal conducting research writing the research report in the form of a dissertation and publishing an article in a reputable international journal. The obtained data were analyzed following the data analysis procedures as suggested by creswell data collection data reduction data organization based on the themes of the narratives retold the narrative experiences the respondents verification data presentation discussion and conclusion drawing. Based on the data analysis the present study reveals that the doctoral candidates experienced 3 main stages of dissertation writing. The first stage was the initial stage which includes topic selection research proposal preparation reseach proposal seminar and revision. The second stage was conducting research which focused on research instrument validation data collection and data analysis. The last stage was writing a research report covering writing research findings writing discussion writing conclusion writing the recommendation for the next researchers and publishing an article for a reputable international journal. In completing each of the dissertation stages the doctoral candidates deveoted much of their reading a huge collection of references writing their dissertations on a daily basis and consulting with their advisors at least twice a month. In addition they also used metacognitive strategy affective strategy and social strategy.
