Abstract

SUMMARY Styati Erlik Widiyani. 2018. The Effects of Pair Work on Students Writing Performance. Doctoral Dissertation. English Language Teaching Doctorate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Mohammad Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D (2) Prof. A. Effendi Kadarisman Ph.D (3) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. Keywords dominant passive pair work writing argumentative writing The research aims to find out whether or not there is a significant difference in writing performance (1) between students working in the dominant-dominant pairs (DDP) and those working in dominant-passive pairs (DPP) (2) between dominant students in the dominantdominant pairs (D-DDP) and those working in the dominant-passive pairs (D-DPP) (3) between the high proficient students working in the dominant-dominant pair (H-DDP) and those working in the dominant-passive pair (H-DPP) and (4) between the low proficient students working in the dominant-dominant pair (L-DDP) and those working in the dominant-passive pair (L-DPP). Since the study is carried out in university setting where random assignment is not feasible the quasi-experimental design is employed. The subjects of the study were the students of the English Department of Universitas PGRI Madiun who were in the fourth semester. The subjects were formed into dominantdominant pairs (DDP) and dominant-passive pairs (DPP) based on the social interaction (mutuality and equality). There were three classifications to determine the dominant and passive students namely from the students observation recording and questionnaire. After the students were formed in DDP and DPP the students were also classified into high and low proficiency. The current study employed the writing topics from the ETS as a standardized test. The topics were argumentative essay about communications and technology. The indicators of the students writing was measured based on the aspect of written production of content organization grammar mechanics and vocabulary. To develop the consistency of the students writing performance the researcher employed inter-rater reliability. The use of inter-raters were to see whether the results of the students writing were homogenous from both of the raters and used to avoid the absolute judgments on the students writing test. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were chosen to answer the research questions. Independent t-test was employed to answer the research questions whether or not there was significant difference in the mean scores between dominant-dominant pairs (DDP) and dominant-passive pairs (DPP). It was carried out by using SPSS 17.0 version. The results show that first the students who work in the dominant-dominant pairs (DDP) perform significantly better in argumentative essay writing than the students who work in the dominant-passive pairs (DPP). Secondly the writing performance of the dominant students in the dominant-dominant pairs (D-DDP) and the dominant students in the dominant-passive pairs (D-DPP) is not significantly different. It indicates that the dominant students perform very close in argumentative essay writing for both of the two different groups of pairs. Thirdly the writing performance of the high proficient students working in the dominant-dominant pairs (H-DDP) and those working in the dominant-passive pairs (H-DPP) is significantly different. It indicates that the students proficiency affects the students argumentative essay writing. Fourth the dominant students and the high proficient students in the dominant-dominant pairs (H-DDP) perform better in argumentative essay writing than the high dominant students in the dominantpassive pairs (H-DPP). Furthermore the low proficient students who work in the dominantdominant pairs (L-DDP) and those who work in the dominant-passive pairs (L-DPP) are not significantly different in argumentative essay writing. It indicates that the low proficient students in both of the two groups (DDP and DPP) have the same argumentative essay writing performance. Finally the four research results above lead to one big conclusion the higher the degree of students dominance in pair work and the higher the quality of bidirectional feedback the higher the level of writing performance. Alternatively an effective type of pair work in essay writing is pair work with high degree of dominance and high-quality bidirectional corrective feedback Since the results of the study shows that dominant-dominant pairs (DDP) is better than dominant passive pairs (DPP) the lecturer should instruct the dominant student to control and help the passive students to achieve good writing performance. The dominant students are recommended to control their peers in giving feedback one another. Furthermore it would be also insightful to replicate this study with different method of classifying the students.
