School leaders teachers and students in fact appear to be essential resources that determine the attainment of the goals. In this sense school leaders practices in creating a system employed at school are important in serving the school members to conduct teaching and learning process. Meanwhile the qualified teachers with high professionalism awareness supported by their meaningful activities give positive results toward the attainment of instructional goals. The problem of this research is What kinds of practices are employed to support EFL instruction at Pondok Gontor This general research question is elaborated into two research questions (1) What school leaders practices support EFL instruction at Pondok Gontor and (2) What teachers activities support EFL instruction at Pondok Gontor The study employs an ethnography case study with qualitative approach. The subjects of the study are the school leaders the English teachers and the students of Pondok Gontor. Meanwhile the data of the study are taken from the school leaders the teachers the students and from school documents. To collect the needed data four research instruments are used by applying the following four methods doing participant observation conducting in-depth interview using field notes and documentation. Finally in analyzing the collected data the steps of qualitative data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman (1984) and Patton (2002) covering data reduction data display and conclusion drawing/verification are used. From the EFL instruction applied at Pondok Gontor it is found that (a) the school leaders practices are reflected in performing visionary leadership setting goals building school culture creating learning environment and designing curriculum and (b) the teachers activities are reflected in their effort in guiding the students learning building up students selves confidence facilitating students during the EFL instruction (engaging students in interaction creating a non-threatening environment and providing students with enough practice). In EFL instruction the school leaders practices are contributive to stimulate teachers professional development to the establishment of inviting learning environment with variety of language exposures and language practices to the creation of trust school climate and school connectedness. Meanwhile the English teachers of Pondok Gontor neither have relevant academic qualification nor certificate to teach English however (a) they have strong commitment in teaching helping inspiring guiding monitoring and assessing students learning students within twenty four hours in the area of pondok (b) they direct the students to involve themseves in practicing their English through cooperating learning or interaction. On the other hand the students show their positive attitude to be always participative disciplined and committed to their own learning. On the basis of the findings of the study some suggestions are addressed to other pondoks English teachers and other researchers. First for other pondoks it is necessary to establish a system of teaching learning and good school culture to stimulate the school members connectedness. By having a feeling of connectedness teachers can share one another to improve their quality in teaching. Second the English teachers are suggested to set instructional goals give model in language practices and direct students to interact actively in English. Third for other researchers the founded weaknesses or delimitation of the study can be used as one of references to conduct further study related to EFL instruction at Pondok Gontor or other pondoks. Finally by considering that EFL instruction is a complex activity it requires teachers who have not only academic qualification and certificate in teaching but also strong commitment in facilitating students learning. That is why it is suggested to institution in education field that teacher s recruitment should not mainly focus on requirements which are administrative in nature. However in the process recruiting the requirement should also cover candidate of teachers commitment as a vital value reflected in teaching assisting guiding and monitoring students in learning and practicing their English.
