Keywords research and development instructional materials integrated writing. It is common practice that writing is treated individually and its teaching is conducted separately apart from the other language skills i.e. speaking reading and listening. Learning to write this way students are likely conditioned not to make use of their language skills synergetically. On the other hand for students to become fully proficient in the target language they need to successfully acquire all four language skills as Rivers (1981) asserts that writing is not a skill that can be learned or developed in isolation it should be taught and developed in cooperation with other skills and aspects of the language. Hence in spite of treating writing in isolation from the other language skills the present academic writing course needs reorienting so as to include such an integrated writing instruction. To include this integrated writing instruction there arises the need for relevant instructional materials in regard to the situation such as one which includes synthesis of multiple sources as Horowitz (1986) classifies which are not yet available. This study aimed at meeting the need for an integrated writing instruction which involves students reading and listening to source-texts prior to writing which in the currently practiced writing courses has not been taken into consideration. To achieve this objective this study followed the procedural research and development (R D) design to develop instructional materials to help equip students with integrated writing skills so that they can respond to oral and written language synergetically or specifically acknowledge and reformulate information from the written and oral source-texts. Through the steps in both research and development phases including a series of evaluation and revision a set of instructional materials for integrated writing (IWIM) consisting of a students workbook a teacher s manual and a listening-CD has been resulted from this R D study. This set of IWIM developed has answered the need for integrated writing instructional materials so that reorienting the teaching of academic writing by including integrated writing instruction can be embodied. The embodiment of integrated writing instruction will in turn satisfy the need for a writing instruction with writing being taught and developed in cooperation with other skills and aspects of language as Rivers (1981) asserts.
