Berdasarkan observasi awal di SMP Negeri 2 Sampit diperoleh permasalahan yaitu masih banyak siswa yang mengalami kesulitan di dalam memahami konsep segiempat. Permasalahan ini perlu diatasi dengan memilih pembelajaran yang memberikan kesempatan kepada siswa untuk berpartisipasi aktif dalam memahami dan menemukan konsep segiempat dan pembelajaran yang memperhatikan tingkat berpikir siswa. Dalam hal ini peneliti menggunakan pembelajaran berbasis teori van Hiele berbantuan media manipulatif karena tahap-tahap dalam teori pembelajaran van Hiele memperhatikan level berfikir siswa serta penggunaan media manipulatif membantu siswa dalam memahami dan menemukan konsep. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan langkah-langkah pembelajaran van Hiele berbantuan media manipulatif yang dapat meningkatkan pemahaman konsep segiempat siswa kelas VII H SMP Negeri 2 Sampit. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan dengan setiap siklus memiliki empat komponen yaitu perencanaan tindakan pengamatan dan refleksi. Subyek penelitian adalah peneliti sebagai guru matematika dan 39 siswa kelas VII H sebagai partisipan. Data dikumpulkan melalui kegiatan observasi aktivitas guru dan siswa pelaksanaan tes awal kuis dan tes akhir siklus wawancara dan catatan lapangan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian tahapan-tahapan pembelajaran berbasis teori van Hiele berbantuan media manipulatif yang dapat meningkatkan pemahaman konsep segiempat siswa terdiri dari 5 tahap yaitu 1) tahap informasi peneliti menginformasikan tujuan pelajaran yaitu mengidentifikasi sifat-sifat segiempat serta menurunkan rumus keliling dan luas jenis-jenis segiempat dan menggunakannnya dalam menyelesaikan masalah kontekstual. Peneliti juga mengingatkan siswa terhadap materi prasyarat yaitu materi garis dan sudut serta materi sifat-sifat segiempat 2) tahap orientasi terarah peneliti mengarahkan siswa untuk dapat mengidentifikasi sifat-sifat segiempat dan menemukan rumus luas dan keliling segiempat melalui LKK 3) tahap uraian peneliti meminta siswa untuk menguraikan alas an pada tahap orientasi terarah 4) tahap orientasi bebas peneliti memberikan siswa soal yang lebih menantang berkaitan dengan sifat-sifat segiempat dan soal-soal kontekstual berkaitan keliling dan luas segiempat 5) tahap integrasi peneliti meminta siswa mempresentasikan hasil diskusi kelompoknya. Pada akhir tahap ini siswa membuat kesimpulan yaitu sifat-sifat serta rumus luas dan keliling segiempat. Adapun hasil nilai pemahaman konsep tes awal menunjukkan hanya 28% siswa yang mencapai nilai minimal 70 siklus 1 hanya menunjukkan 44% dan siklus 2 mencapai 82%. ABSTRACT Kadir Kamaliyah. 2017. Based on the first observation in SMP Negeri 2 Sampit it was found problems many students have difficulty in understanding of quadrilateral concept. This problems could be solved by choosing the learning that provide opportunity for students to discover and understand of concept and the learning had to concern of the level of student thinking.In Junior High School mathematic could not to be taught in the abstract directly. The teacher should teach by steps concrete semi-concrete and abstract. In this case the researcher used van Hiele s learning theory using by manipulative because the phases learning of van Hiele theory very concerned about the level of students thinking and by using manipulative helped students to engage in understanding and finding concept. The pupose of study is to describe the phases of van Hiele learning using by manipulative that can improve seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sampit conceptual understanding of quadrilateral. The type of this study is a classroom action research.This study consist of two cycles and each cycles contains 4 components i.e planning acting observating and reflection. The subject of study is researcher as a mathematic teacher and 39 students of VII H class as participants. Data was collected through observation of teacher s activity observation of students activity the first test quiz the final test of cycle interview and the result of field note. Based on this study the phases of van Hiele learning which could improve the student s understanding of quadrilateral concept consist of five activities i. e. 1) infomation the researcher explained the goal of learning that to identified of quadrilateral properties and determined of circumference and area formulas and use its in solving contextual problems. The researcher reminded previous students about prerequites too 2) guided orientation the researcher directed the students to could identify the properties of quadrilateral and to determined of circumference and area formulas by LKK. In this activity and the students used manipulative sticky grid paper 3) explicitation the researcher asked the students to describe the reasons how to solve at the guided orientation phases 4) free orientation the researcher provided two complex problems in the worksheet (open ended question and question with closed answer) 5) integration the reseacher asked one of the group to present the result of disscusion. Teacher and the students made summary about materials. Then the result of understanding conceptual the first test showed that only 44% students who reached score minimal 70 in the first cycle 44%. And the second cycle reached 82%.
