Abstract

Key words effectiveness literature circles reading comprehension The research was conducted into the effectiveness of literature circles on students reading comprehension. The research problem is Do the students who are taught using literature circles achieve significantly higher reading comprehension than those who are taught using conventional teaching reading activity As a tentative answer the research hypothesis is The students who are taught using literature circles achieve significantly higher reading comprehension than those who are taught using conventional teaching reading activity . To answer the question a quasi experimental research was conducted using nonrandomized control group pretest-posttest design involving two variables. Teaching strategies were the independent variable and the dependent variable was the students reading comprehension. The samples were taken from the population of the second semester students of PAI (Pendidikan Agama Islam/ Islamic Studies) STAI (Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam/ College for Islamic Studies) Daarussalaam in the academic year 2009/2010. There were three classes (class A 23 students B 23 students and C 22 students). To choose the experimental and control group the researcher used simple sampling technique by which class A (23 students) was assigned to experimental group while class B (23 students) was assigned to control group. The instrument of data collection was a multiple choice test consisting of 30 items used in pretest and posttest. The pretest means were analyzed statistically to see the equivalence of the experimental and control group before the experiment. An independent t-test analysis of the difference between the pretest means yielded a t of 0.33. This was not significant at the level of significance of .05 one-tailed (with df 44). The t-value was lower than the critical value (1.678). This indicates that there is not a significant difference between the experiment and control group on their pretest. Therefore an independent t-test was used to analyze the posttest means. Based on the statistical computation using an independent t-test the t-value for the posttest means were 3.11. This was significant at the level of significance of .05 one-tailed (with df 44). The t-value was higher than the critical value (1.678). Therefore Ho was rejected. It is concluded that literature circles is effective. Based on the findings recommendations are addressed to English teachers/ instructors and future researchers. English teachers/ instructors should consider utilizing literature circles due to the benefits of the strategy. For future researchers it is suggested to conduct more sophisticated research on the same topic.
