Abstrak Writing is one of the four language skills that plays a very important role in the teaching of English since writing can really help the students learn a second language. However the ability of the second year students of MTsN Mojorejo in writing is still unsatisfactory. The students get difficulties in finding and generating ideas they feel confused to start their writing morever the students have low motivation and seem uninterested in writing. This study is aimed to improve the writing ability of the second year students of MTsN Mojorejo Blitar by utilizing photographs. This strategy is selected since it can guide the students to generate idea into a meaningful composition. Photographs usually capture past events and photographs surely can help students remember details about people places and events . In short they can be powerful sources of texts. Besides a photograph is worth a thousand words because one picture can tell the students something even have sequences of story behind it. The research problem of this study is How can the utilization of photographs improve the writing ability of the second year students of MTsN Mojorejo Blitar particularly in writing recount texts . To reach the purpose the reseacher employed action research which was conducted in the classroom following four stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of the research were 29 students of the second year of MTsN Mojorejo Blitar in 2008/2009 academic year. This study was implemented in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of six meetings while the second cycle was in two meetings. The data of the study were gathered through observation checklists field notes questionnaires and students writing. The findings of the study revealed that the appropriate steps used in utilizing photographs consisted of the following procedures (1) leading students to the topic by giving some questions (2) introducing the strategy and the procedure on how to make it (3) assigning the students to work in groups (4) asking students to put the photograph in front of them (5) giving time to look at the photograph (6) informing students about the things they should do in their groups (7) listing as many words related to the photograph then generating ideas based on the guiding questions (8) giving a model of recount based on the photograph (9) assigning students to start writing their first draft individually (10) giving time to review and revise the draft using revising guide (11) asking students to write better draft based on the feedback from the teacher for their final composition. Futhermore the results of the study showed that the utilization of photographs had improved the writing ability of the second year students of MTs Negeri Mojorejo Blitar in writing recount texts. In the first cycle the students average score was 60 7 and 14 students out of 29 students (48 28%) got the score equal or greater than 65. In the second cycle the average score for final composition was 70 8. 23 out of 29 students (79 3%) achieved the score equal or greater than 65. Besides the results of the study showed that the students were active and motivated in teaching and learning process utilizing photographs. From the findings it can be concluded that utilizing photographs is very useful not only in improving the students writing ability but also in motivating the students in the learning process. Therefore it is suggested that the English teachers utilize photographs in teaching of writing especially recount text since it is helpful in terms of giving the students an interesting way to generate idea to make a meaningful composition. Finally for the future researchers particularly those who have the same problem and are interested in doing their research it is suggested to conduct action research in the teaching of writing recount text in different level of education for example Senior High School. Moreover it is also suggested that the future researchers conduct action research in the teaching of writing using different type of genres especially descriptive text.
