Abstract

SUMMARY Istiqomah, 2019. Enhancing StudentsÔÇÖability in writing Analytical Exposition through Problem Based Learning using Herringbone Technique. Thesis. English Language Teaching Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisor: (1) Dr. Ekaning Dewanti Laksmi, M.Pd, M.A, (II) Dr. Sintha Tresnadewi, M.Pd. Key Words: writing analytical exposition, Problem Based Learning, Herringbone This study aimed to increase the ability in writing analytical exposition text of the grade classroom of SMKS Gajah Mada in the academic year of 2018/2019. This study was applied from August to October, 2018. The first cycle consisted of four meetings the same with in the second cycle; they were planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In the first cycle, students learnt how to do the PBL steps and herringbone diagram. Then, it was continued to practice in the next meeting by group discussion. In the third meeting, the students did peer assessment about their work. In the last meeting, the students constructed their writing work based on the experience and knowledge before. The subjects of this study were 20 students of Grade XI TKR 1 of SMKS Gajah Mada Banyuwangi. The data were collected from the studentsÔÇÖ writing scores in final post test, observation, check list, questionnaires, and field notes. The data were obtained from studentsÔÇÖ final test. The result of this study showed the improvement of studentsÔÇÖ ability in writing after they were taught through problem based learning using herringbone technique. StudentsÔÇÖ result significantly passed the level of knowledge in writing at the end of the cycle 2. Hence, this study accomplished in two cycles was successful as it reached the criterion of success. The process writing using PBL strategy employed in this study consisted of five stages, namely identifying problem, defining the problem, selecting the relevant information, developing solution through checking the difference of view, and taking strategic action. The finding of this study indicates that the PBL strategy using herringbone was successful in improving both the studentsÔÇÖ writing score and studentsÔÇÖ participation in writing. The improvement can be seen from the increase of studentsÔÇÖ mean scores both in the writing process and in the final test, and the percentage of studentsÔÇÖ participation and respond from cycle 1 to cycle 2. In summary, Enhancing studentsÔÇÖ ability in writing analytical exposition through Problem Based Learning using herringbone technique is one of the suitable teaching strategies that significantly increased the studentsÔÇÖ writing ability especially in writing analytical exposition. Further, the researcher suggested EFL teachers to conduct similar study on different language skill and component.
