v SUMMARY Utami Lucia Niken Tyas. 2018. EFL Students Linguistic Problem in Chunking. Tesis the English Language Education School Graduate Program Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. Siusana Kweldju (II) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. Key Words EFL students linguistic problems chunking This study aims at analyzing the linguistic problems in chunking experienced by EFL students finding out the possible factors causing the problems which are related to students background and teaching learning process in the classroom and analyzing the students eye span. Two instruments were used to collect the data of this study namely a chunkingtask and an interview guide. The chunkingtask was designed based on five sentence structures which are difficult to unravel namely complex noun groups nominalization coordination subordination and participial and prepositional phrases. The task was aimed to answer the first and third research questions. After the chunkingtask was given an interview was carried out to respond to the second questions. The interview questionswere constructed based on the model for the study of classroom teaching with the focus on context and process variables. Fifteen sophomore ELT students were involved in this studyand were included into three groups of students the high medium and low level students. The results of the data analysis demonstrated the following findings. First among the five aforementioned sentence structures the students made the most number of chunkingmistakes when reading aloud sentences with complex noun groups. Furthermore the high level students which were expected to have less inappropriate chunking outnumbered the medium level students chunking mistakes. Second the further explanation about the possible causes of the chunking problems can also explain why despite their chunking mistakes the high level students were still able to perform better in reading. Those factors were the students background family background motivation reading habits and behavior in the classroom. Meanwhile factors which did not affect the performance werethe instructional activities in the classroom as well as the students learning style.Third regarding the eye span the high and medium level students had wider eye spans than the low level students. It was proven by the average words of the chunks. The high and medium level students chunks consisted of about7 words while the low level students chunks consisted of 6 words. However the recorded time showed that although their eye spans were wider the medium level students read slower than the low level students. Therefore it can be concluded that wider eye spans did not guarantee readers to read faster and that speed reading did not affect the students reading comprehension.
