Abstract

SUMMARY Pratiwi N. 2018. The Correlation of Syntactic Knowledge with Reading and Listening Comprehension TOEFL ITP-Based Test Focus. A Thesis of Graduate Program in English Language Education of State University of Malang. Under the supervision of Utari Praba Astuti and Sintha Tresnadewi. Keywords Syntactic Knowledge Reading Comprehension Listening Comprehension TOEFL ITP-Based Test As a standardied proficiency test TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is utilized to measure the language proficiency level of people whose native language is not English. Most institutions providing certified test also provide TOEFL ITP-based test which functions as a prediction test. Considering every test-taker has different difficulties related to language those kinds of test the researcher ought to seek how much syntactic knowledge can affect their reading and listening comprehension within TOEFL ITP-based test. Therefore aim of this study was to find out the precise degree of relationship between syntactic knowledge (represented by grammar scores) to both reading and listening comprehension within TOEFL ITP-based test context. The data collected were in form of examinees individual scores of EPT taken from two well-known language institutes in Malang. The data representing 160 examinees were divided into three sets of scores grammar reading and listening. Utilizing SPSS the researcher analyzed the data using Pearson s correlation coefficient. The result shows that syntactic knowledge and reading comprehension have strong positive correlation (p value of .673). It indicates that examinees grammar scores might predict their reading scores within TOEFL ITP-based test. In other words the higher syntactic knowledge the test-takers have the higher scores they will get on reading comprehension. Similarly another result of this study reveals that syntactic knowledge and listening comprehension have moderate positive correlation (p value of .595). It implies that examinees grammar scores might predict their listening scores within EPT as well. To put it differently the higher syntactic knowledge the test-takers have the higher scores they will get on listening comprehension. In the end the researcher found that reading comprehension has significantly stronger correlation to syntactic knowledge than listening comprehension does.
