The Effect of Using Story Map on the Ability in Writing Narrative Texts of Students across Learning Styles. Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono Ph.D. (1) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. Key Words story map writing process approach narrative text. Some studies found the positive effect of story map on students writing but no study had investigated the effect of story map through process approach on the ability in writing narrative text across learning styles. Writing should become a concern because this skill is more difficult than reading moreover with the low level of Indonesian literacy that was found from PISA (The Program for International Student Assessment). Indonesia was in the position of 64 among 70 countries. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of using story map through process approach on the ability in writing narrative text across learning styles. This study involved 33 eight-grade students of SMPIT Asy-Syadzili Malang and was conducted to answer two research questions (1) Do the students taught using story maps gain better scores in their ability of writing narrative texts than the students taught using linear notes (2) Is there any difference in the ability in writing narrative texts between visual and auditory learners who were taught using story maps The factorial-quasi experimental design was employed to anwer the research questions. Pre-test treatments and post-test took 7 meetings for each group. The researcher asked the students to do a pre-test in meeting 1 listen the explanation about narrative text in meeting 2 plan and draft their narrative texts in meeting 3 revise edit and publish their writing in meeting 4 repeat the writing activity as in the meeting 3 and 4 in meeting 5 and 6 (with different topic) and do a post-test in meeting 7. The experimental group used story map when planning the narrative text in meeting 3 and 5 while the control group used linear note. The data analysis by using t-test showed that the experimental group got better score significantly (with the p value 0.022 0.05). Further investigation showed that the biggest effect was on the aspects of organization content and vocabulary respectively. The second data analysis was also done using t-test and showed that there was no difference in the ability in writing narrative texts between visual and auditory learners who were taught using story maps. This study also found that generally students writing scores were improved in both groups which was believed as the impact of using process approach. Regarding the results of this study it is suggested that English teachers to use story maps through process approach as teaching media and approach in writing narrative texts. For further researh it is suggested that the researchers perform the same study using subjects with higher level of education.
