English Language Teaching Graduate Program Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono Ph.D. (II) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd. Keywords Tumblr Argumentative Essay Ability in Writing Students Responses This research aimed to investigate the effect of using Tumblr in EFL students ability in writing Argumentative essay. Tumblr is one kind of Social Networking Sites which is often considered as the mixture of Instagram Facebook and Blog. It has features and appearance which are similar to Instagram and Facebook. The user can upload various posts such as pictures video text link and audio material. Moreover Tumblr functions similar to Blog since it does not require any limit of words in its post. Thus the users can upload a text as long as they want without being limited by certain number of characters in each post. Considering all of those features that Tumblr has Tumblr is considered as a kind of social media which is suitable to be used in writing activity. However there are still few researches in this matter. Hence this research attempted to find out whether the students gained improvement in their ability in writing Argumentative essays after being taught by using Tumblr and how they perceive the use of Tumblr in the teaching of writing Argumentative essay. A pre-experimental research design was employed. It was administered in two of Argumentative Writing Classes of English Department Faculty of Letters Universitas Negeri Malang. It involved 36 students of those two classes which then were considered as one group. The students in these classes were Undergraduate Program students who were in their fourth semester in academic year 2017/2018. There were two kinds of data needed for this research the data on the students ability in writing Argumentative essays before and after the treatment was done and the data of students perception on the use of Tumblr in the teaching writing Argumentative essays. In this research Tumblr was used as a platform to do exercise about Argumentative essay and draft as well as compose Argumentative essays on several topics given. From the result of students pre-test and post-test scores it was revealed that the students improve their ability in writing Argumentative essays. The mean of the students post-test scores was significantly higher than pre-test scores which was indicated by one-tailed paired sample t test. Therefore it can be concluded that the students had better ability in writing after being taught by using Tumblr. Furthermore from the questionnaire it was found that most of the students showed a positive response towards the use of Tumblr in their writing class even though they did not think that it increased their motivation in writing activity due to several external factors such as bad internet connection problem and the limited access to Tumblr. vi Based on the result of the research it can be concluded that Tumblr can become an effective media used in teaching writing. However it is suggested that the English teachers who wish to use Tumblr in their classroom make sure that the students have a good internet or Wi-Fi connection in order to make the teaching and learning activity run smoothly. They should also be as creative as possible to optimize the use of Tumblr in the classroom. For those who wish to conduct similar research on this matter it is suggested also that they use other types of experimental designs to prove the effectiveness of using Tumblr or other social media platforms to improve students ability in writing.
