Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. Keywords Instagram EFL students writing ability Instagram apparently becomes one of trending SNS and students often use it. They use Instagram to post pictures and describe pictures with texts. It seems that students find it interesting to express ideas through SNS. Instagram seems can become the media to be used in the education context. There are several reasons of choosing Instagram as the media to teach writing. First teachers and students can easily access internet. Second the availability of mobile devices particularly smartphones. In the 21st century almost everyone has their own smartphones including students and teachers. Third students are familiar with Instagram. Fourth Instagram offers visual data pictures and videos that can be used as the learning material. This study examined the effect of the use of Instagram on EFL students writing ability. This study employed one of pre-experimental type specifically one-group pre-test and post-test design. There were 34 EFL students of Universitas Negeri Malang involved. The students were taught to write opinion essays with Instagram as the media. In total there were eight meetings one meeting for the pre-test administration six meetings for the treatment and one meeting for the post-test administration. In the pre-test and the post-test the students were asked to make an opinion essay based on the given topics. It was found that the mean in the pre-test and post-test score that showed an improvement. Compared to the mean of the pre-test which was 60.02 the mean of the post-test improved 15.39 points. So the mean of the post-test was 75.42. Moreover the success of the use of the Instagram could also be seen from the result of the data analysis by using Paired Sample t-test. The finding of the data analysis showed that it was significant which meant that there was a statistically difference between the mean value of the pre-test and the post-test.
