English Language Teaching Postgraduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. Keywords Language Learning Strategies Non-English Department Students Successful NEDS Language learning strategies (LLSs) is essential for developing communicative competence that is needed in English skills Individual s differences reflects on the understanding of their language learning strategies. An interesting fact on the result of Non-English Department Students (NEDSs) in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in the academic year of 2017-2018 was 139 students majoring Al-Ahwal Asy-Syakhsiyah (AS) got higher average TOEFL scores (439) than 147 English department students (425) which may reflect different used of LLS. A descriptive qualitative case study is used to investigate the language learning strategies used and the dominant one by ten successful NEDSs AS Department Students in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang who have been chosen since getting TOEFL proficiency score above 499. Three instruments were used to gather data they are documentation questionnaire and interview. The result shows that NEDSs employed all LLSs and creating their own learning opportunities. Only MAA that did not use social strategy though he used all other strategies. It means that successful NEDSs believe that exactly all LLSs are good for their language learning improvement. Another result shows dominant LLSs are employed are compensation as they are good guesser for the unfamiliar words memory strategy since they always try to memorize to retain the vocabulary in mind and metacognitive strategy where they always create best setting for them to learn.
