ABSTRACT Wulandari Diyah. 2017. Words Reflecting Violence in Grimm s Little Red Cap and Little Snow White a Corpus-Based Study. Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono Ph. D. (2) Prof. Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. Keywords violence Grimm s fairy tales words corpus discourse context The study is intended to find and analyze violence in Grimm s Little Red Cap and Little Snow White. There has been plenty of research on the tales due to the controversial violent contents in them. Many argue to eliminate the harsh contents and many others claim to preserve the originality of the literature heritage. However very few of the previous studies provide empirical data on the topic. Hence it is essential to carry out a corpus-based study to reveal the frequency of words reflecting violence the percentage the corcordance and the discourse context in which the words are used to reflect violence on the two corpora to prove the claims of the pre-existing theories. The instruments to carry out the study are the researcher as the key instrument and Antconc an application that works on the corpora computing the word list frequency percentage and concordance of the texts and two corpora of Grimm s fairy tales. The first corpus is the 1812/first edition of Little Red Cap and Little Snow White in Grimm s Children s and Household Tales. The next corpus is the 1857/last edition of them. The two tales were taken as the objects of study considering they are mostly and globally well known read told re-made re-created in many forms until today often for children. The editions were chosen to be compared based on their claimed as the most and least violent. This study proposes to find out the answers to which words reflect violence in the two corpora (the first and last editions) how often these words are used to reflect violence in the two corpora in what discourse contexts these words are used to reflect violence in the two corpora what the pedagogical implications of the findings are. The analysis of 81 concordance of words reflecting violence shows that there is violence in the two corpora as many as 4.60% in the first edition that is 82 words out of 1780 words and 3.45% in the last edition which is 71 words out of 2058 words. It emphasizes that there had been a lot of revision to the violent contents since the first publication until the last edition by the brothers Grimm. The violent scenes left in the last edition according to psychological and social studies on violence in children literature are still needed in the tales i.e to workshop fear/anxiety in children to train struggle and bravery and to instill the spirit to gain victory to name a few with the companion of sensible adults. By providing empirical data of violence in Grimm s Little Red Cap and Little Snow White we provide the information for parents caregivers educators and children-related professionals about the degree of violence in the two tales and how to use them wisely for their pupils character building. The findings of the study may add their existing knowledge and references about the content awareness on children literature. For future researchers the result of the study can be a beneficial basis or background knowledge for futher research on violence in children literature especially in Grimm s Children s and Household Tales more particularly on Little Red Cap and Little Snow White.
