Abstract

ABSTRACT Aprilia Nissa Rahma Nur. 2017. Rhetoric Patterns of Abstracts in Academic Writing Empirical Evidence Emerging from Evolutionary and Contrastive Analyses. Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. and (II) Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. Keywords rhetoric moves abstracts academic writing contrastive analyses evolution Among the genres frequently studied in contrastive rhetoric research articles have been the focus of quite a number of studies in recent years due to its role as the primary form of scholarly communication. Additionally dissertations also act as important information providers although they do not attract as many studies as research articles. Seeing how abstracts can possibly have different situations in terms of length and readership while still possess similar rhetorical goals (to inform or/and to persuade readers) this study seeks to compare abstracts rhetorical patterns of abstracts in research articles and dissertations in Indonesia and how they evolve across time. Qualitative corpus-based analysis was used to investigate 20 research articles and 18dissertations abstracts in Indonesia in the field of English Language Teaching or Applied Linguisticsfrom 2007 to 2016. These abstracts were analyzed in terms of their rhetorical moves using Hyland s five-move method (Introduction Purpose Method Product Conclusion). The present study reveals that both research article and dissertation abstracts employed most if not every Hyland s five rhetorical moves with the most frequently used patternI P M Pr C.The similarity shows consistency in abstract writing across academic genres in English Language Education and Applied Linguistics in Indonesia. The differences occurred in the obligatory rhetoric moves the existence of two extra moves in dissertation abstracts namely Structure and Limitation and the emphasis put in each move. However there is no significant evolution of rhetoric move patterns observed possibly due to the constrain of space in article abstract writing Indonesian scholars tendency to opt for safer less-direct way of presenting ideas and their familiarity with the conventional English structure of the abstract. Several suggestions that can be made from this study are 1) in teaching academic writing it should be explicitly stated that variation of rhetoric pattern does occur in academic writing across culture although they are not very apparent in the writing of abstract 2) while it is true that novice writers should conform to institutional guideline in constructing their abstract it is important to bear in mind that the ultimate goal of the writing of abstract is to be both informative and persuasive in order to fully succeed in conforming to the rhetoric style of a certain field and 3) for future researchers more studies covering larger corpus need to be done to gain more empirical and accurate conclusion on rhetoric patterns and their evolution.
