Advisor 2 Prof. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. Key words ESP coursebook textbook evaluation technology information This study is about book evaluation focusing on ESP coursebook for Information Technology program. There are two coursebooks selected by the writer as the object of evaluation. They are Oxford English for Information Technology 2nd Edition published on 2002 and Infotech English for Computer User 4th Edition published on 2008. This writing aims to evaluate ESP coursebooks for Information Technology program externally and also internally. The specific objective of this evaluation is to acknowledge how well the ESP textbooks Oxford English for Information Technology 2nd Edition and Infotech English for Computer User 4th Edition meet the criteria from the checklist then compare the evaluation result of the two coursebooks and find out the characteristics of each coursebook. The instrument applied to obtain the data is adapted evaluation checklist. The criteria of evaluation checklist include aims and approaches design and organization language content and exercises skills and strategies topics and practical considerations. From the objectives proposed in this study the writer can get clear conclusion that (1) Oxford English for Information Technology 2nd Edition meets the criteria of textbook evaluation checklist very well in specific the percentage of success is 92 70% and Infotech English for Computer User 4th Edition also meets the criteria of textbook evaluation checklist very well in specific the percentage of success is 93 75% (2) from the evaluation process IECU can meet the criteria of tectbook evaluation better than OEIT and (3) the characteristics of OEIT are having content map pairwork guide and real interview to IT persons but it has too long activities in each unit and there is no clear learning objectives while the characteristics of IECU are having content map games activity model CV online tasks clear learning objectives Useful Language box and short activities in each unit but it less pairwork or group work activities. For the authors they are expected to consider the characteristics of the book then maintain the strengths while fix the weaknesses. Next ESP lecturers and learners should do some medication if they would like to use these coursebooks as their teaching and learning reference. The weaknesses of each book has been stated in this study So ESP lecturers are expected to be more innovative to modify the weaknesses into something better and interesting in class. For the further researcher this book evaluation might be used as a reference to conduct the textbook evaluation on ESP coursebook to other major or other level. Or this can be preliminary study for a deeper study about the implementing those coursebooks in classroom.
