Advisors (I) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. (II) Dr. Ekaning Dewanti Laksmi M.Pd M.A Keywords learning autonomy teacher s role the 2013 curriculum The implementation of the 2013 curriculum is aimed for the better future of Indonesian education in facing the global era by equipping the students with attitude knowledge and skill. The implementation of this curriculum brings some impacts to teaching English as the example. Its implementation challenges the teachers to teach many English basic competences with only limited face-to-face time 2 periods or once in a week. This circumstance challenges English teachers to find an effective way to teach their students so that they can accomplish all basic competences with only limited time. One of the methods used is learning autonomy. This study focuses on Vocational High School English teachers roles in empowering students learning autonomy towards the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. The data in this research were collected from 40 experienced English teachers of Public Vocational High Schools and Private Vocational High Schools in Malang who have been involved in the 2013 Curriculum. The researcher used explanatory sequential mixed methods with interview as the main instrument to collect the data which applied structured-interview as the guideline. The researcher first conducted quantitative research analyzed the results and then built on the results to explain them in more detail with qualitative research. The result of this research showed that the subjects face a new challenge towards the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum in their English teaching. The subjects were found apply learning autonomy method as a way to achieve the goal of the 2013 Curriculum. This method is applied because the subjects believe that learning autonomy is providing language learners with the ability to be more responsible to their own learning. In assisting students learning autonomy subjects play some roles. They as the research showed there are four roles of Vocational High School English teachers in Malang namely teacher as a manager teacher as a facilitator teacher as a counselor and teacher as an assessor. There are some aspects that need to be taken into consideration based on the findings and the discussions for the improvement of English teachers roles. First Vocational High School English teacher must embrace and empower students learning autonomy for it provides the students to be long-learner. Second English teachers should also play other roles in empowering students learning autonomy more than just becoming a manager a facilitator a counselor and an assessor for there are many roles of teachers.
