This study aimed to develop a local content-based comic as narrative supplementary reading material for the eight graders in SMPN 2 Bolo. It was developed to overcome the problem in the limitation of English reading materials which contain local story of Bimanese. Moreover there was limited access of interesting materials that lead to the difficulty of teachers to motivate the students in reading activities. Therefore the product was expected contributing to students reading activity in a more joyful way either inside or outside the classroom. This study adapted the design of Research and Development proposed by Borg and Gall (1983). The procedure of this research consists of three main stages covering needs assessment product development and product validation. There were four experts being involved in the theoretical validation meanwhile there were twenty two of the eight graders and an English teacher participated in the empirical validation. In the empirical validation the comic was used as a material for teaching narrative. The classroom activities with the comic book were observed. After the teaching was conducted the questionnaires were distributed to the students and the teacher. The English teacher was also interviewed to provide feedback related to the comic book. Based on data gathered from the empirical validation it was found that the aspects of pictures and cover get score more than 80% this indicates that the cover and pictures inside the comic were categoried as very high which got mostly positive feedback from the students. This means that this part got only minor revision based on the feedbacks. The other aspects including the binding and pages plot of the story lettering language text length organization and instruction and task get score ranged from 70-79%. This range indicates that those aspects are categorised as high positive responses. This means that the action in those aspects get partially revised. The points of the revision were based on the students feedback that was written in the comment column. It showed that the product was accepted in which it is already good to be a supplementary material for narrative reading. Based on the feedback from the empirical validation some revisions were made to the cover and the aspect of visual and verbal inside the comic. However there was not revision to the plot and the characterization of the characters. The product is a good material for students to learn English based on their own culture. Furthermore teachers are suggested to employ more visual media and material in reading activity as they serve enjoyment that may help fostering students understanding of narrative text. In this case a local content-based comic can be an alternative. Further it is expected that teachers can develop their own product of other local stories as a learning source for teaching and learning. ABSTRAK Jannah Miftahul. 2017. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan komik berbasis konten lokal sebagai bahan bacaan tambahan naratif bagi siswa kelas delapan di SMPN 2 Bolo. Komik ini dikembangkan untuk mengatasi masalah keterbatasan bahan bacaan bahasa Inggris yang berbasis cerita lokal masyarakat Bima. Selain itu keterbatasan materi yang menarik menyebabkan sulitnya guru memotivasi siswa dalam kegiatan membaca. Oleh karena itu produk ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi terhadap kegiatan membaca siswa dengan cara yang lebih menyenangkan baik di dalam maupun di luar kelas. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan model penelitian dan pengembangan dari Borg and Gall (1989). Prosedur dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari tiga tahap utama analisa kebutuhan pengembangan produk dan validasi produk. Empat orang ahli berpartisipasi dalam validasi teoritis sementara itu terdapat 22 siswa dari kelas delapan seorang guru bahasa Inggris berpartisipasi dalam validasi empiris. Pada tahap validasi empiris komik tersebut digunakan sebagai bahan dalam pengajaran naratif didalam kelas. Kegiatan kelas dengan buku komik diamati kemudian kuesioner dibagikan kepada siswa dan guru setelah pembelajaran selesai. Guru juga diwawancarai untuk memperluas umpan balik terhadap produk komik. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dari hasil validasi empiris ditemukan bahwa aspek gambar dan cover mendapatkan skor lebih dari 80% ini menunjukkan bahwa sampul dan gambar di dalam komik dikategorikan sangat tinggi dimana mendapat banyak umpan balik positif dari siswa. Ini berarti bahwa pada bagian ini hanya dilakukan minor revisi berdasarkan masukan. Aspek lain termasuk penjilidan dan halaman alur cerita huruf bahasa panjang teks organisasi dan instruksi dan tugas memperoleh skor berkisar antara 70-79%. Rentang ini menunjukkan bahwa aspek tersebut dikategorikan memperoleh tanggapan positif yang tinggi. Ini berarti bahwa tindakan revisi pada aspek-aspek tersebut yaitu revisi sebagian. Skor di atas menunjukkan bahwa produk tersebut diterima dan dapat dikatan bagus untuk menjadi bahan pelengkap bacaan naratif. Berdasarkan umpan balik dari validasi empiris beberapa revisi dilakukan pada sampul dan aspek visual serta verbal di dalam komik. Namun tidak ada revisi terhadap plot dan karakterisasi karakter. Produk ini merupakan bahan yang bagus bagi siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris berdasarkan budaya lokal mereka sendiri melalui beragam aktivitas di dalam kelas bahasa Inggris. Para guru disarankan untuk menggunakan lebih banyak materi dan media visual dalam kegiatan membaca karena dapat mendorong pemahaman siswa terhadap teks. Dalam hal ini komik berbasis konten lokal bisa menjadi salah satu alternatif. Selanjutnya diharapkan para guru dapat mengembangkan produk mereka sendiri dari cerita lokal lainnya untuk bahan pengajaran di dalam kelas.
