ABSTRACT Prasetyaningrum Dian Islami. 2017. Improving Agriculture Students Reading Comprehension by Implementing Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT). Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd. (II) Dr. Enny Irawati M.Pd. Keywords improving reading comprehension agriculture students task-based language teaching. The first year of Agriculture students in Faculty of Agriculture Brawijaya University (UB) are divided into two major departments Agribusiness and Sustainable Agriculture department. The students from both departments have to take English subject only in one semester for three credits. In one semester of English subject the lecturers surely need to design an effective English course which can achieve the objective of the course. This study is aimed to know how TBLT can be implemented to improve Agriculture students reading comprehension. This study employed Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) design and was conducted in one cycle with 7 meetings. The subjects for this study were 22 students from Sustainable Agriculture Study Program. The procedure of the study was adapted from Kemmis and McTaggart (2007) which included planning the action action/implementation observation and reflection. This study used three instruments such as observation checklist field notes and reading comprehension test. During the TBLT implementation the researcher was helped by the observer to fill in the observation checklist and field notes. The findings of the study showed that TBLT could be implemented to improve Agriculture students reading comprehension by the following activities. In the pre task the activities covered (1) brainstorming activity (2) performing the example of similar task but different topic (3) displaying pictures or video to be observed by the students. In the task cycle the activities covered (1) let the students to read the text individually and highlight some important points (2) assign the students to work in a group and find specific and implicit information (3) ask the representative of the group to present the result of the discussion (4) let the other students to give feedbacks. Finally in the post task the activities covered (1) letting the students to summary the text by using their own words and (2) giving feedbacks for the activities. Regarding the research findings a suggestion is addressed to the English lecturers who face the same challenge to apply TBLT for teaching and learning activities especially in improving students reading comprehension. Furthermore the suggestion is also addressed for future researchers who have the same area of concern in TBLT to develop materials specifically in reading comprehension for the other kinds of scientific text based on specific department for example medical engineering and fishery.
