ABSTRAK This study analyzes the grammatical errors across proficiency levels. The samples were collected from the second semester of Agriculture students oral presentation in ESP class. They were grouped into high and low proficient students by using TOEFL test. The errors in their speech were classified by using surface structure taxonomy namely misformation misordering addition omission blends and miscellaneous. Findings indicate that misformation is the dominant error produced by both levels of proficiency. It is followed by omission addition miscellaneous misordering and blends. In terms of the source of errors the errors of the low proficient students were mostly resulting from interlingual transfers while the errors of the high proficient students were mostly resulting from the intralingual transfers. Penelitian ini bertujan untuk menganalisis kesalahan tata bahasa Inggris dilihat dari tingkat kemampuan Berbahasa. Data penelitian ini diambil dari presentasi lisan Bahasa Inggris oleh mahasiswa semester 2 Fakultas Pertanian di kelas Bahasa Inggris Tujuan Khusus (English for Specific Purposes). Mereka dikelompokkan menjadi grup berkemampuan berbahasa tinggi dan rendah dengan menggunakan tes TOEFL. Kesalahan penggunaan butir butir bahasa diklasifikasikan berdasarkan Struktur Taksonomi Lahiriah yakni salah bentukan salah urutan penambahan penghilangan campuran dan kesalahan tak beraturan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua tingkat kemampuan berbahasa mahasiswa memiliki kesalahan penggunaan butir butir bahasa yang sama secara berurutan yaitu salah bentukan penghilangan penambahan salah urutan tak beraturan dan campuran. Sedangkan penyebab dominan kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa berkemampuan rendah berbahasa berasal dari interlingual transfer dan penyebab dominan kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa berkemampuan tinggi berbahasa berasal dari intralingual transfer.
