Keywords Claim Support Argumentative Essay Some genres of writing such as narrative expository and argumentative actually had been taught in senior high school. However they are explored thoroughly in university level. From all those genres argumentative is considered by the university students as the type of writing that is most difficult compared than others. It is because in argumentative writing the writers need to develop their skills organize ideas evaluate evidence and express themselves and later on they still write after college Rottenberg (1997 3). Therefore this study investigates the argumentative essay especially on claims and supports. This study employs a descriptive qualitative study. It is because it uses the natural setting which is the final project of the students that is in the form of magazine. Then it is descriptive because it gives a description on the types of claims and the supports that defend them. To analyze the data the researcher used some indicators and criteria that were adopted from Rottenberg s framework (1997 3). The findings of the study show that there are two types of claim found in argumentative essays of students. They are claim of value and claim of policy. Moreover it also reveals that the students mainly use supports such as facts statistics and also opinion in defending their claims in their essays. In this case the use of examples dominates in the presentation of fact. Then the information that consist of numbers found in the essays also indicate the use of statistics. Furthermore the causal connection expert opinion and solution to problem characterize the use of opinion. Besides the quality of the supports was also analyzed in this study. There are some indicators such as up-to-dateness relevancy sufficiency consistency and representativeness to see the quality of the facts. Then to decide the quality of statistics the aspects that should be paid attention are the sources of statistics the definition of the terms the comparisons which are used between comparable things and the completeness of significant information. In addition in order to know the quality of opinion there are three aspects that were used namely whether the opinion used is qualified or not whether the source is biased or not and whether the source has bolstered the claim with sufficient and appropriate evidence or not. From that analysis the supports used by the students in defending the claim met two or three criteria or indicators of Rottenberg s theory (1997). Therefore it can be said that the supports used by the students overall are qualified enough.
