ABSTRACT Muslikan. 2017. Utilizing Data-Driven Learning (DDL) Strategy to Improve the Students Grammatical Mastery. Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Mohammad Adnan Latief M.A Ph.D (II) Dr. Johannes Ananto Prayogo M.Pd M.Ed. Key Words DDL Strategy improve grammatical mastery Simple present tense is undoubtedly one of the most difficult topics for students in grammar learning. Many teachers and practitioners have implemented countless strategies to solve this problem. One of them is through the utilization of data-driven learning as a part of CALL. This study aims at describing data-driven learning (DDL) strategy to improve students grammatical mastery especially in simple present tense at SMP PGRI 1 Kediri in Academic Year 2016/2017. This study employed collaborative classroom action research as the research design. The researcher administered the research in one cycle only which consisted of four main stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subject and setting of the study were 41 the ninth grade students in SMP PGRI 1 Kediri. The data ware collected from individual grammar test score observation checklist and field note. The findings indicated that the utilization of data-driven learning (DDL) strategy has successfully improved the students grammatical mastery in simple present tense as well as their participation. The improvement can be seen from the results of the test which mentioned that there were 31 students (76%) passed the minimum passing grade which meant based on the criteria of success (70%) the results have clearly reached the target. The collaborator observation also showed that the average of the students participation from the first until the last meeting reached 85 84% which meant they had actively and enthusiastically participated in the implementation of the strategy. The students improvement on grammatical mastery as well as their participation is obtained by implementing data-driven learning (DDL) in 10 main activities 1) Assigning the students to run concordance through the Antconc software (2) instructing the students to open the file of report text (3) guiding the students to reset the display of the tool (4) asking the students to type the terms which are going to be analyzed (5) asking the students to clone the results (6) guiding the students to analyze the results of concordancing (6) instructing them to rewrite the results in the table given (7) asking the students to retype the other term such as are has have do does etc. one by one and asking them to do the same process until all determined terms are analyzed and rewritten in the completely (8) checking the students work (9) choosing the students randomly to write their work in the white board (10) discussing the students work. It is suggested for other teachers that they should apply this strategy to solve the students problem in grammatical mastery. Future researchers are also suggested that they use the findings of this study as reference to conduct further research related to the utilization of data-driven learning (DDL) strategy.
