To obtain it understanding the use of cohesive devices is needed. Focusing on the use of cohesive devices this study was designed to figure out the types of cohesive devices employed in argumentative essays by both ELT and ELL students of English Department Universitas Kanjuruhan Malang. Besides it also investigated the degree of appropriateness in using cohesive devices by both groups of research subjects aimed at comparing their ability in using cohesive devices. This study implemented descriptive qualitative study and corpus based study. Corpus AntConc 3.4.4w. was chosen to classify and identify word(s) phrase(s) or sentence(s) indicated as cohesive devices. It was useful to use Corpus AntConc 3.4.4w. since it enabled to categorize the research data based on the category content and the composition. The findings revealed that the ELT students used 11 types of cohesive devices in argumentative topic 1 13 types in topic 2 and 12 types in topic 3. Otherwise the ELL students used 12 types of cohesive devices in argumentative topic 1 and 13 types in topic 2 and 3. Focusing on the capability of each group in using cohesive devices appropriately it was found that the different percentage of the appropriate use of cohesive devices were employed by the ELT and ELL students was scanty. The percentage of the ELL students using cohesive devices was 93.4% otherwise the ELT students was only 92.4%. The findings also showed that the ELL students were more capable using more various types of cohesive devices than the ELT. It was influenced by the ELL students reading materials. They got the exposure and source of how to implement cohesive devices appropriately from the reading materials of their specific subjects which are related to English linguistics and literature. Therefore it is suggested reading a lot to sharpen the students capability in using various types of cohesive devices appropriately. It is also recommended for the English writing lecturer to give more explanation to the students related to the use of cohesive devices. Future researchers are suggested adding gender variable to see whether or not male and female have the same ability in using cohesive devices in their writing texts.
