Graduate Program in English language Teaching Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors Dr. Johannes Ananto Prayogo M.Pd. M.Ed and Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono PhD. Keywords Problem Based Learning (PBL) Environment-related vocabulary writing ability In an environment-based school or Adiwiyata school the teachings of all subjects have to be integrated with environmental educational materials. Teaching English as foreign language should cover this requirement. On other hand students lack of vocabulary and writing ability hinder the success of the English teaching learning process. PBL can carry the mission of learning about the language and environmental education. This research aims to determine the effect of environmental Problem Based Learning on students environment-related vocabulary achievement and writing ability. The research was conducted for 5 weeks employing a quasi-experimental method by involving two classes of the eleventh graders of SMAN I Papar each of which consisted of 30 students. One class was assigned to be the experimental group and treated with environmental Problem Based Learning while the other class was assigned to be the control group and taught conventionally. Two kinds of instruments used to determine the effect of Problem Based Learning to the achievement of environment-related vocabulary were objective test and environment-related vocabulary list. The instrument used to examine the effect of Problem Based Learning on students writing skill was hortatory essay. The scores of the post-test were analyzed by using t-test and ANCOVA. The first finding revealed that Problem Based Learning significantly affects the students environment-related vocabulary achievement with the significance level of 0.000 ( t-table (2.001717). The second finding proved that Problem Based Learning gave a significant effect on students hortatory writing ability at 0.000 ( (2.0001717) especially on the aspects of content and vocabulary while the organization and mechanics scores indicated an increase but not significant yet. The learning steps of PBL which are orientating organizing investigating developing and presenting analyzing and evaluating have effectively helped the students in performing better environment-related vocabulary achievement and writing ability. The Problem Based Learning approach is then recommended for the teachers who want to develop students vocabulary and writing ability. This research is beneficial for the school stake holders in considering policy dealing with the green curriculum. Furthermore this research could be used as a reference for the future researchers in the field of teaching practice at secondary school. 8195 ABSTRAK Iswandari Dyah Christina. 2017 Pengaruh Pembelajaran Berbasis masalah terhadap kosakata tentang lingkungan hidup dan kemampuan menulis Thesis Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Pascasarjana Universitas Negeri Malang. Pembimbing Dr. Johannes Ananto Prayogo M.Pd. M.Ed dan Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono PhD. Kata kunci Problem Based Learning (PBL) Environment-related vocabulary writing ability Dalam kebijakan kurikulum sekolah Adiwiyata semua mata pelajaran wajib terintegrasi dengan materi pendidikan lingkungan hidup begitupun pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris Di sisi lain keberhasilan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris terhalang oleh kesulitan siswa dalam kosakata dan kemampuan menulis. PBL dipercaya mampu melaksanakan misi pembelajaran bahasa sekaligus konten lingkungan hidup.
