ABSTRACT Khusyabaroh Lutfiyan. 2017. Students Perceptions about Demotivating Factors in Learning English. Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Education Universitas Negeri Malang. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. Key words Students perceptions demotivating factors learning English Students demotivation is an area which is not widely reached from the studies. Even in Indonesia there have not been any studies discussing and also published online about demotivation. Abundant studies merely talk about motivation. Hence there was a chance for the researcher to uncover a topic which has not been discussed in Indonesia particularly conducted in Malang. This study intends to investigate the students perceptions about demotivating factors in learning English seen from seven aspects of demotivation they are teacher classmates textbooks and activities students characteristics infrastructure and facilities family background and social condition. It was conducted in Malang city and sincerely assisted by 223 ninth grade students as the participants. It employed survey research design which was presented by descriptive qualitative. The data was collected using questionnaire involving 48 close-ended questions and 2 open-ended questions and interview for digging more information. The findings of this study reveal that from seven aspects asked for demotivation factors only four aspects became demotivators for ninth grade students in Malang they were teacher classmates textbooks and activities and students characteristics. It shows that there are three factors arose from human and one non-human aspects. It proves that human aspect is a dominant demotivator and hold significant role in learning English for ninth grade junior high school students in Malang. The studies about demotivating factors in Learning English conducted in Indonesia are still limited and absolutely there are heaps of limitations. Therefore for future researchers hopefully can reveal other findings related to students demotivation in Indonesia. ABSTRAK Khusyabaroh Lutfiyan. 2017. Bahkan belum ada penelitian yang membahas dan mempublikasikan tentang demotivasi di Indonesia. Banyak penelitian hanya membahas tentang motivasi. Oleh karena itu peneliti mempunyai kesempatan untuk menguak sebuah topik yang belum dibahas di Indonesia terutama yang dilaksanakan di kota Malang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pendapat siswa mengenai faktor demotivasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris yang dilihat dari tujuh aspek demotivasi yaitu aspek guru teman sekelas buku pelajaran dan kegiatan karakter siswa latar belakang siswa dan kondisi sosial. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di kota Malang dan melibatkan 223 siswa kelas sembilan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survei yang disampaikan dengan deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang diperoleh menggunakan kuesioner yang terdiri dari 48 pertanyaan close-ended dan 2 open-ended dan menggunakan wawancara untuk menggali informasi lebih dalam. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dari tujuh aspek yang ditanyakan hanya empat faktor yang membuat siswa kelas sembilan di Malang terdemotivasi faktor tersebut berasal dari guru teman sekelas buku pelajaran dan kegiatan dan karakter siswa. Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga aspek yang berhubungan dengan faktor manusia dan satu aspek non-manusia. Hal itu membuktikan bahwa faktor manusia menjadi factor yang dominan dan memegang peranan penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas sembilan SMP di Malang. Penelitian tentang faktor demotivasi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang dilaksanakan masih terbatas dan pastinya banyak keterbatasaanya. Oleh karena itu semoga para peneliti selanjutnya bisa mengungkapkan hasil lainnya yang berhubungan dengan demotivasi siswa di Indonesia.
