Abstract

Key words Workbook English Drama Character Building The study is aimed to develop a workbook for English drama by incorporating character building for college students of English Department in Lambung Mangkurat University. The workbook is developed based on the needs of student and it matches the demand of the course outline of the English Department in Lambung Mangkurat University. The method used in this research was Research and Development (R D) by using adopted model from Borg and Gall. The stages in the development involve the needs assessment reference study material development expert validation try-out and final product. The needs analysis stage was aimed at getting information in terms of topic and kinds of exercises related to the proportion of the workbook for drama class. The reference study stage was done to review the existing material used in the classroom the instructional goal based on syllabus and the course outline. After those stages the workbook developed by following the framework made by Aniroh and Hutchinson and Waters for exercise development. The next step was expert validation. Two experts were involved expert in material development and education practitioner expert. After the product was validated the try-out stage was held. 20 students was involved in the try-out and it was conducted in order to have students comments on the developed workbook identify students difficulty and improve the instructional in the workbook. The result of the developed workbook gathered from the expert in material development and the expert in education practitioner was good. However there were some revisions in terms of the clarity of instruction and examples in the workbook (in Unit 1). The result of try-out for 6 units of the workbook indicated that the workbook was good enough but some lay-out and instruction need to be revised based on the students feedback. Based on the result of the research several recommendations are offered as the following. The comments from the experts students and also lecturer of Literatures II (Drama) can be used to improve positive aspects of the workbook. The clarity of course objectives is required to be the basic foundation to make the content materials of the workbook. It is also necessary for the researcher or other people who are interested in the product to try-out all units in the workbook to get the information about the strengths and weaknesses of each chapter based on the user of the book. Other recommendation is to use more than one teacher or lecturer to teach so that more insight and input can be obtained. For the future researcher especially material development area this research can be used as one reference for developing workbooks especially for drama classes.
