Abstract

Key Words picture series process writing approach writing narrative texts. This research is designed to improve the students achievement in writing narrative texts using the picture series as a media through process writing approach. Based on the result of a preliminary study conducted at SMPN 1 Batu on 15th and 16th October 2012 it was found that the students writing achievement in writing narrative texts on grade eight F academic year of 2012/2013 is still unsatisfactory. There are some problems faced by the students in eighth F graders of SMPN 1 Batu. First the students writing achievement is still poor. Second many of the students have difficulties to generate ideas and to organize ideas. The ideas are not clearly stated and the sentences in their writing product are not well organized. Third the students find difficulties to use grammar in their writing. There are still many mistakes in their content grammar and vocabulary. Therefore this classroom action research was conducted to solve the students writing problems. The research problem formulated in this research is How can the use of picture series improve the students writing achievement in writing narrative texts of the eighth graders of SMPN I Batu The research employs a classroom action research design in which the researcher worked collaboratively with one of the English teachers of SMPN 1 Batu who is involved from the beginning up to the end of the process of the research activity in designing the lesson plan determining the criterion of success implementing the action observing and doing reflections. The subjects of this research were 25 eighth graders of SMPN 1 Batu of the 2012/2013 academic year. This research was conducted in 2 cycles and each cycle comprises four meetings. The data of this research are obtained through observation checklist to obtain information about teacher s and the students activities and performance during the implementation of the strategy field notes to note the data beyond the coverage of the observation sheet and writing test measured using scoring rubrics to identify the students progress in writing narrative texts.. The use of picture series as media through process writing approach to teach writing narrative texts encompasses several procedures First at the pre writing stage the students were introduced to the picture series. A set of picture were introduced in the Cycle 1 entitled Goldilocks and the three bears consist of seventeen picture series meanwhile in the Cycle 2 a set of pictures were given to the students entitle Little Red Hen consists of twenty pictures. Second the students were asked to identify the aspects in the pictures in terms of determine the title characters and setting. Third the students were asked to make a list of vocabulary based on the picture series given. Fourth at drafting stage the students were asked to write sentences based on list of vocabulary. Fifth at revising the students were given the revising guideline the students were given the example of revising in the form of outline and students were asked to revise the texts in terms of content organization and vocabulary. At editing stage the students were asked to edit the texts in terms of language use (grammar) and mechanics. At editing stage students were given the editing guideline students were given the example of editing students were asked to edit their draft and rewrite it. At publishing stage the students were asked to published their writing work by reading aloud while the other students do correction orally. Furthermore the results of the research revealed that the use of picture series as a media through process writing approach to teach writing narrative texts is improving the students achievement in writing narrative texts on grade eight of SMPN 1 Batu. The improvement was indicated by the increase of students mean writing scores from 53.44 in preliminary test 60 68 in the first cycle to 68 64 in the second cycle. The results of the research showed that the use of picture series through process writing approach solved the students problems in writing narrative texts. Besides students were enthusiastic motivated and actively involved in teaching and learning process using picture series as media through process writing approach in the teaching and learning process.
