Keywords Prototype English Textbook for Reading Developing materials English for IT 1 Information Management This study is aimed at producing a prototype of English textbook for reading purposes for D3 Program of Information Management of Politeknik Negeri Malang (POLINEMA.) The result of preliminary study showed that the available textbook was not in line with the new syllabus since it still reflects the teaching of General English while the new syllabus emphasizes the teaching of ESP that combines the exposure of the academic topics and activities and their application in real-life situation. Some interviews were held to find more information related to the course the needs of the students their expectation toward the course and lecturers and the Head of the Program expectations. Some documents studies related to English for IT 1 course were also conducted in order to define the prototype textbook. In addition questionnaires were also distributed to the students in order to find out the ideal English textbook that they expected and able to cover both their academic and real-life needs. Based on the information found in the field the prototype of English textbook for reading purposes was developed. The subjects of the research were 3 parallel classes of Information Management Program 2011/2012 Academic Year consisting of 26 students that were chosen using purposive sampling technique to collect information related to the developed textbook. The data taken from the research were taken from questionnaire validation form and interview guide. The finding of the study revealed that the prototype textbook for reading purposes has fulfilled the expectation in producing English textbook that is able to cover both students academic and real-life needs as seen from the positive responses collected from the questionnaire which mostly stated the criteria in the questionnaire were very good. In spite of the positive response there were also negative response that needed to be put into mind as a consideration for further revisions particularly in the criteria of the cover and layout design. Most suggestions mentioned that the layout design were one of the most important points in determining students motivation in learning English in spite of the interesting topics being discussed. Revision were made base on the results and suggestions given. Referring to the findings of the research English lecturers for Information Management Program of POLINEMA are suggested to use the prototype textbook in class. The future researchers who will conduct the same research were recommended to implement the research for different students level and/or different field of study.
