Abstract

Key Words Communication Apprehension Communication strategies Communication Task Oral Presentation. This study was conducted to find out the communication strategies used by students with high and low communication apprehension levels. The investigation is based on Dornyei s (1995) classification of communication strategies. It focuses on knowing the types of communication strategies used by both groups of the students finding out whether it is true that students with high communication apprehension level used more number of communication strategies than the low communication apprehension students and revealing the reasons why they used the strategies. The study employed a qualitative research design. The subjects were the Speaking III and V students of the English Department of STKIP PGRI Blitar (College of Teacher Training and Education PGRI at Blitar). The data were collected through communication tasks (oral presentations) observations interviews and video recordings. Initially Using Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) the students were categorized into high and low communication apprehension level. Then the students were asked to do two communication tasks (two oral presentations) in front of the class. Their performances were video-recorded as the source of data and then transcribed to be analyzed. Afterwards a focus group interview was conducted to disclose the reasons for using the communication strategies. The findings show that the students with high and low communication apprehension used Avoidance Strategy category which includes Topic Avoidance and Message Abandonment strategies. Both groups of students also employed Compensatory Strategy category with five similar strategies namely Approximation Using of Non Linguistic Means Literal Translation Code Switching and Appealing for Help. However the students with low communication apprehension level used one different Compensatory Strategy namely Using of All-purposed words. Furthermore in Stalling/Time-gaining devices category both group of the students used Using of Fillers or Hesitation Devices. Lastly both students with high and low communication apprehension used three Other Strategies beyond Dornyei s (1995) namely Repetition Self Correction and Combination of Other Strategies. The findings also prove that the subjects with high communication apprehension level used more number of communication strategies than the subjects with low communication apprehension level the communication apprehension level subjects employed 443 times (54.16%) and subjects with low communication apprehension level used 382 times (48.84%). The findings also revealed that the reason why the students with high communication apprehension used communication strategies was to deliver the messages more smoothly and clearly. Meanwhile the subjects with low communication apprehension stated that communication strategies would make their communication more fluent so that they would not get stuck in the middle of their communication. These findings then lead to the suggestions that teachers should consider introducing the appropriate communication strategies to students and incorporating them in the teaching and learning through the classroom activities. This is to teach the students to communicate effectively and to avoid the communication breakdown. It is also suggested to the students who might be affected by communication apprehension and having communication difficulties to make use of appropriate communication strategies to solve their communication problems. Then the suggestion accordingly goes to the further researchers to investigate the appropriate communication strategies and their teachability to students in consideration that many factors can affect the use of communication strategies such as the students first language language proficiency level gender task and also the cultural background.
