Program in English Language Teaching - State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. (2) Dr. Monica Djoehana. D. Oka M.A. Keywords comprehension skills questioning technique expository texts. This study aimed at improving the students comprehension skills on expository texts using a questioning technique at the English department of IKIP Mataram. The result of the preliminary study showed that the students found difficulties in comprehensively reading an expository English text with some indicators they could not identify the strength and the weaknesses of the author s arguments and they could not reflect on the author s ideas with their logical reasons. Another finding dealt with the way was that the teacher did not lead the students not to be able to read comprehensivelybecause the teaching procedures did not really promote the goal of emancipation between the students and the authorand questions as direction to achieve such skills were not maximally presented. To solve those problems this present investigation employed a questioning technique. This research was designed into a Collaborative Classroom Action Research in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in planning implementing observing and reflecting the action. The subjects of this study were the third semester regular students of class E at the English department of IKIP Mataram. This study was conducted in two cycles in which each consisted of three meetings for employing the questioning technique and one meeting for evaluating it. The findings show that the questioning technique could improve the students comprehension skills on expository texts. The improvement could be seen in the increased score from the students preliminary test to cycle 1 and cycle 2 tests. In the cycle-1 test the percentage of the student who gained equal to or greater than 20 points was 59.5 %. The next cycle it was 80 %. Such improvement was supported by the improvement of the quality of the teaching-learning activities during the implementation of the intended technique throughout four steps namely (1) explaining and brainstorming (2) grouping and discussing (3) leading and (4) concluding and presenting. Considering the research findings it can be concluded that the questioning technique is still outstanding in improving the students comprehension skill on expository texts type. There are some suggestions can be uttered for (1) the teachers who have similar problems in their class can apply this technique as one of the alternatives in the teaching-learning of RC3 (2) it might be the starting point for the staff at the English department of IKIP Mataram to yearly evaluate the students English proficiency and (3) for the future researchers it can probably be a beneficial reference to conduct other researches in a similar field.
