Abstract

Key words Effectiveness Scoring Guide Writing Achievement. This study was conducted to investigate whether the use of PSSG (Providing Students with a Scoring Guide) strategy in the teaching of writing is effective. The problem of the study is Do students who are taught by PSSG strategy have better argumentative writing ability than those taught without PSSG strategy . Thus it is intended to obtain reliable information whether there was a significant difference in the students writing achievement between the experimental group and the control groups. The design of the study was quasi-experimental with non-randomized pretest posttest. The subjects of the study were taken from the students of English Literature Department of Brawijaya University Malang who took Writing IV that focus on the writing of argumentative essay. Class D was the experimental group and class J was the control group. In collecting data the instruments used were writing tests (pretest and posttest) as the main data and student questionnaire and interviewing the English lecturer as additional data. Pretest was administered to both groups before the treatment to know the homogeneity of the two groups. Then the experimental group was taught to write the argumentative essay by providing them scoring guide while the control group was taught without providing them with scoring guide. After that both groups were given a posttest. The student questionnaire after the treatment was given only to the experimental group to know the students attitude towards the implementation of PSSG strategy. The pretest means of both groups were analyzed statistically by using Independent T-Test to know the difference ability between the two groups before the treatment. The test revealed that the significant value is 0.008 (0.05). This indicates that the students mean scores of the experimental and control groups are not significantly different. Therefore there is not enough evidence to reject the Null Hypothesis. It means that the theoretical hypothesis is not supported with empirical evidence. The result of the additional data showed that 88% of the students gave positive attitude towards this strategy. The students thought that the PSSG strategy was able to provide them clear vision about what the criteria are used by the lecturer in judging their writing product. Besides the students the lecturer also gave positive attitudes and responses towards the implementation of PSSG strategy. The lecturer felt that the PSSG strategy helped the students in improving their argumentative writing ability. The finding of the research showed that statistically the students taught using the PSSG strategy does not show significantly higher achievement than those taught without the PSSG strategy. However the results of the additional data showed positive attitudes from both the students and the lecturer towards the implementation of PSSG strategy. Therefore the results of this research were interpreted from two points of view (statistical and practical views). Statistically the students mean scores in the posttest from both classes are not significantly different. However practically there were positive attitudes from both the students and the lecturer towards the implementation of PSSG strategy. Therefore the writer concludes that the PSSG strategy is as effective as the non-PSSG strategy in improving the students writing ability. Then it is suggested that English lecturer use PSSG as an alternative strategy in teaching writing to improve the students writing ability covering content organization grammar vocabulary and mechanics. Besides owing to some limitation of this study a replication of the study is suggested to be conducted by considering the following points (1) conducting the experiment in a longer time and in a larger number of subjects (2) improving the control towards the possible threats in both group during the treatment (3) involving the students characteristic to be investigated in the research (4) applying the scoring guide for peer-review sessions.
