Abstract

Key Words The Teaching of English State Junior High School 8 Malang. The present study is an attempt to describe the teaching of English at State Junior High School 8 Malang. The study is intended to describe the instructional materials the teachers use the instructional activities they conduct the instructional media they use and the way they assess the students achievement. The study is qualitative in nature. The subjects of the study are two English teachers and the students of grades VII H and VIII G. The main instrument of the study is the researcher herself. In completing the data observation sheet interview guide field notes and video recorder are used. The data and source of data are what the teachers do in the teaching and learning process in the classroom which is relevant to the research questions. The techniques used to collect the data are observation documentation recording and interview. The collected data are analyzed by following the procedures data collection data reduction data display and conclusion drawing. Based on the analysis the study reveals the following findings. Firstly both English teachers of grades VII H and VIII G use two textbooks as the main source of teaching materials. The two textbooks which are used by the teachers are 1) English in Focus for Junior High School (SMP/MTs) Students and 2) Get Along with English for SMP/MTs Students. For supplementary instructional materials both teachers of grades VII H and VIII G use the students workbook (Lembar Kerja Siswa/LKS) entitled Practise Your English Competence written by Nur Zaida and published in 2009 by Erlangga Publishing. Beside the textbooks and workbook mentioned above the teachers also use other sources of instructional materials such as English magazines newspapers handouts and recorded materials (CDs DVDs and VCDs). Secondly the teachers conduct the teaching and learning activities based on the current curriculum. The teachers develop language skills and language components in an integrated manner. Moreover both teachers of gradesVII H and VIII G present the language skills and language components through the phases of BKoF (Building Knowledge of Field) MoT (Modeling of Text) JCoT (Joint Construction of Text) and ICoT (Independent Construction of Text). It means that their instructional strategies are in line with the 2006 English curriculum. Thirdly concerning the instructional media used both teachers use high tech media and various kinds of media. The high tech media that the teachers use are the laptop LCD projector the Internet DVD player cell phone and television. The other media are PowerPoint slides pictures real objects the language laboratory and the white board. Lastly to assess the students learning progress both teachers use formal and informal assessments. The formal assessments are in the form of the formative test and the summative test. The formative test is conducted after finishing one or two topics or chapter. Meanwhile the summative test is conducted in the middle and in the end of semester. The informal assessments are in the form of on-going assessments which include oral questions teacher observation giving assignments and reading aloud. Regarding the students success in the English subject is determined based on the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (Minimum Passing Grade) score which is 70 out of 100 and the mastery criteria (90-100 Excellent 80-89 Very Good 70-79 Good 60-69 Ok 50-59 Poor and 0-49 Very Poor) set by the teachers. Based on the two indicators it is found that the teaching and learning of English in the two classes is successful since the mean scores of the students have surpassed the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal(Minimum Passing Grade) that is 77.2 for grade VII H and 76.4 for grade VIII G and the students scores in the two classes all fall within the good very good and excellent category and no students obtain the ok poor and very poor category. In reference to the findings of the study some suggestions are proposed. First the teachers should keep using various sources of instructional materials preferably authentic materials to achieve the instructional objectives as well as to fulfill the students needs. The teachers should also use much more English in presenting the lesson to give students more English exposure and they need to provide more opportunities to the students to communicate in the target language either with the teachers or among the students. Referring to the instructional media the teachers should use other media that are available at the school and use them proportionally. In addition they need to assess the students achievement with alternative or authentic assessment. Second the principal should encourage and support the teachers to make the students perform more communicative language activities in the classroom and give opportunities to the students to perform their language achievement through the language contest at the school level. The third suggestion is directed to other researchers who want to conduct similar studies with different research problems different methods of investigation and take some Junior High Schools with a wider population as a comparison of the implementation of the teaching of English.
