Abstract

State University of Malang Graduate Program in English Education. Advisors (I) Dr. Suharmanto Ruslan M.Pd. (II) Prof. H. Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D. Key words SQ3R Improving Reading Ability PGMI A Private Islamic College (STAI) Diponegoro Tulungagung. The objective of the study was to describe how to use SQ3R strategy in improving the second semester students reading comprehension of Islamic Elementary Teacher Education (PGMI). Based on the problem found in preliminary study that students got difficulty to identify the unfamiliar words explicit main idea and supporting details identify the explicit information. Then SQ3R applied to overcome the problems. SQ3R stands for Survey Question Read Recite and Review. The method of the research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) study involves the students of the second semester of Teacher Education for Islamic Elementary School (PGMI) in reading comprehension that consisted 22 students. The criteria of success was students could achieve gain equal or more to 15 point of 70% of all students. The result of the study noted that reading comprehension test in cycle I the students score who achieved the gain was 31.81%. While in cycle II the students score who achieved the gain was 86.36%. Then the researcher determined to stop the cycle. Since the result met the criteria of success. The result of implementing the SQ3R strategy in survey step students can identify the unfamiliar words. Students can identify explicit information in question steps in reading recite and review steps students can identify explicit main idea and supporting details. From the steps it can be concluded that the strategy of SQ3R is very effective for teaching reading comprehension in tertiary level of second semester students at Islamic Studies Elementary Teacher Education (PGMI) if it follows several procedures (1) activate student s background knowledge before reading (2) providing some pictures or real objects as the instructional media (3) finding the meaning of the unfamiliar words (4) formulating list of questions as the prediction (5)reading the introductory and concluding paragraph (6) answering the previously formulated questions (7) keeping the information in the long term memory (8) recalling the keeping information (9) presenting reports by using own sentences (10) doing verification about the report by reading the text (11) writing the verification result. For further researchers it is expected to have such a modified strategy in different field not only language skill but also in science or social study. 8195
