Abstract

Thesis English Language Department Graduate Program State University of Malang Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Gunadi H. Sulistyo M.A. (II) Dr. Hj. Arwijati Wahyudi M.Pd Dipl. TESL Keywords Narrative Writing Experiential Learning Cycle Experiential learning cycle (ELC) is a teaching technique which is used the learners experienced as the basis. Based on the background of the study the objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the experiential learning cycle to improve the students narrative writing score. The present study employs pre experimental design with pre test and post test. This design was selected for the purpose to measure the effectiveness of experiential learning cycle in improving the narrative writing skill of the eleventh grade of language program students of SMAN 8 Mataram West Nusa Tenggara. This design did not include a control group. The treatment was carried out in 7 meetings they were pre test experience stage process stage generalization stage application stage and post test. The data obtained from the pre test and post test were analyzed using SPSS version 16. Based on the result of the statistical analysis it is revealed that the alternative hypothesis was accepted since the observe score is higher than the value in the t-table. It means that there is significantly better writing achievement after the implementation of the experiential learning cycle technique. Based on the research findings there are some research suggestions related with the implementation of the experiential learning cycle. Firstly the English teachers of SMAN 8 Mataram explore more the use ELC Technique in teaching narrative skills. The variation of media may be improving students writing skill. Secondly to the school principal of SMAN 8 Mataram to provide internet or hot spot areas where teachers can download pictures and other media to improve their writing skills and lastly to other researchers to follow up another research on the use of the experiential learning cycle.
