Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Keywords writing Facebook descriptive classroom action research. Writing is one of the language skills that is often considered difficult. Based on the questionnaire given to the students in the preliminary study the major problems in writing descriptive texts were how to generate and organize the ideas and how to write using appropriate grammar vocabulary and mechanics. Moreover the teacher also provided less time for teaching writing compared to the other language skills. To solve the problems the use of Facebook through process-genre based approach is proposed to be applied in teaching writing. The strategy is chosen under the consideration that the students have been greatly familiar with the use of Facebook. Moreover the strategy is practical to apply and some previous studies found that Facebook is effective to help students in writing compositions. The objective of this study is then to improve students writing ability in writing descriptive texts particularly describing a person by using Facebook features namely Profile Pictures Profile Information and Wall Application. This study used collaborative classroom action research design which consisted of four stages namely planning an action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting on the observation. The collaboration was done in designing the lesson plans setting the criteria of success observing the implementation (the collaborative teacher became the observer) and doing reflection. In addition the subjects of this study were 34 students of Grade 8 Class C in SMP Negeri 19 Malang in 2011/2012 academic year. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guides questionnaires observation sheet field notes and the students individual final writing. The main activities during the teaching and learning process based on process-genre based approach were Building Knowledge of Field (BKOF) Modeling of Text (MOT) Joint Construction of Text (JCOT) and Independent Construction of Text (ICOT). At the BKOF and MOT stages the students were given a descriptive text then the teacher guided the students to analyze the generic structure language features and conjunction used. A model on how to write a descriptive text using Profile Picture and Profile Information on a Facebook account was also given. Then at the JCOT part 1 the students wrote a descriptive text through pair work through the writing process. Next at the JCOT part 2 they were assigned to write a descriptive text individually through the writing process yet the teacher s conference was still done as needed. Lastly at the ICOT stage they wrote a descriptive text totally independently. The result of the study showed that the use of Facebook through process-genre based approach can improve the students s ability in writing a descriptive text. The percentage of the number of the students achieving the score above the minimum passing grade (KKM Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal) had improved from only 2.9% (1 student out of 34 students) in the preliminary study to 64.7% (22 students) in Cycle 1 and to 100% (34 students in Cycle 2). The students were also more enthusiastic during the writing activities because of the use of Facebook as the interesting media. Based on the findings of the study it is suggested for English teachers to implement the use of Facebook features in teaching writing especially a descriptive text. In implementing Facebook it is suggested that the teachers be selective in choosing the appropriate Facebook account which contain appropriate information for students. For further researcher it is suggested to use Facebook for different text types and on different grades and levels of education. In addition related to the weaknesses identified in this study further researchers and English teachers are suggested to have online activities not only for publishing but also for finding information about a particular person that is going to be described.
