Abstract

Department of English Language Education Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. (2) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. Keywords Topical Structure Analysis Parallel Progression Sequential Progression and Extended Parallel Progression. Topical structure analysis is a framework that is proposed to help writers create better coherence in their writings. This framework observes the internal coherence of a text by focusing on three progressions that are believed to contribute to coherence. These progressions parallel progression sequential progression and extended parallel progression has their own roles in making the flow of the information runs more coherently. The objective of this study is to analyze the applications of topical progressions in English Education students Expository essays. The data for this descriptive-qualitative study were in the form of expository essay consisting of 4 to 5 paragraphs. 12 Expository Essays written by undergraduate students of seventh semester English Education Program Jember University became the materials of the study. Three topics are provided for the students to choose and develop. The writing prompt used in this study was evaluated by a writing expert and it has been tried out to some students who have similar characteristics with the 12 students in this study. The essays are analyzed by using the Lautamatti s (1978) framework of topical structure analysis with additional guideline adopted from Schneider and Connor (1991). The analysis the text was initiated firstly by identifying the sentence topics then determining the sentence progression based on each category and the last was charting the progression of the sentence. The data then was displayed in the form of the percentage use of each progression. The study found that sequential progression is the most dominant progression applied by the student with 46% followed by the extended parallel progression 31% and the least is parallel progression with 22%. There is 1% of the total clauses found without any progression as no topical subjects are found in these clauses. The parallel topic that dominates in this study is the use of repetition and pronoun. There are three types of sequential topics that are found to be applied by the students. 51% of sequential topics is developed through directly related topic then 27% through indirectly related topic and 17% is unrelated sequential topic. These findings bear some pedagogical implications. The first TSA is a fruitful framework for text analysis as it successfully identifies the problems of coherence in the students essay. This approach thus is useful for assisting students to write coherent text. The second the writing instructors need to train their students on how to apply TSA for students self analysis. The third TSA is seen as a good alternative teaching material for students in learning coherence since most writing books do not provide clear instruction of building coherence instead they only show the ways to use transitional signals or cohesive devices. This study has some limitations. Involving the relatively small number of subjects (12 students) is notably the weak point of the present study. Therefore collaborations with other institution for higher chance in getting more subjects that are willing to participate in such a study is recommended. Finer formulation of the criteria for the selection of the subjects is strongly recommended. Besides the employment of inter rater is suggested for more reliable analysis. The current study only deals with sentence/clauses analysis instead of including more comprehensive analysis by including paragraph per paragraph analysis. In Addition by focusing more on the learners characteristics as second language writers who belong to expanding circle people further study might give better explanation and description on this phenomenon. Finally for further research there is a chance to investigate different kind of text type in order to get better description on TSA application.
