Abstract

Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Mohammad Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D. (2) Prof. UtamiWidiati M.A. Ph.D. Key words concept mapping reading ability. The objective of the study was to develop the implementation of the concept mapping strategy to improve the reading ability at the second semester students at SekolahTinggi Agama Islam Ma arif (STAI Ma arif) Metro Lampung. The subjects of the study were 25 students consisting of three male and 22femalestudents the result of preliminary study showed the students encountered three problems related to learning reading the students had little interest in learning reading could not determine the topic and supporting details and found it hard to grasp the outline of information from a text. The researcher assisted by an English teacher as his collaborator employed classroom action research to observe teaching and learning process.The study was conducted within two Cycles in which each Cycle comprised planning implementing observing and reflecting. Four instruments consisting ofobservation sheet field notes interview and test were used to collect the data in Cycle 1. Five instruments consisting of observation sheet field notes interview test and questionnaire were used to collect the data in Cycle 2. Two data from the findings in this study are qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data described the learning interaction reflecting the students academic atmosphere meanwhile quantitative data showed the students reading achievement. The findings of the students academic atmosphere from observation sheet which describedthe students learning interaction among them to discuss main information and their learning interaction with their teacher to confirm their concept mapping works. Field note describedthe students learning interaction among them to share their ideas and their learning interaction with the text in focusing on reading activity. Interview in Cycle 1 revealed thatthe students felt comfortable happy and enjoyed learning reading using concept mapping. Interview in Cycle 2 revealed that concept mapping was comfortable helpful to get outline of information and an easy way to comprehend the text.Questionnaire indicated 47% of the students responses was strongly agree and 53% of their responses was agree for the benefit of concept mapping implementation. The finding of the students reading achievement showed thatout of 25 students 19 students got the score above 60 in Cycle 1 meanwhile all students got the score above 60 in Cycle 2. Three steps of concept mapping strategy to enhance the students learning atmosphere and improve the students reading achievement included (1) the students determined the important information from the text and filled it in the concept mapping diagram. (2) The students shared their ideas about their works of concept mapping diagram with their friends. (3) The students presented the text and the diagram of concept mapping in the class and discussed them with their classmates. Concept mapping strategy has been proved to enhance joyful learning atmosphere and improve the students learningreading achievement in classification text. English teachers are recommended to use concept mapping in teaching reading by three considerations covering the text should be classification the concept mapping diagram should be correctly and clearly arranged and the reading text should train the students reading skill. Moreover other English researchers are suggested to use different models of concept mapping formats or other English skills.
